A female United Kingdom age 22-25, anonymous writes:

I am a 16 year old girl, and my problem might seam stupid but it causes me worry and embarrassment. I know my mother and elder sister have no body hair anywhere and I want to be the same but my mother has forbidden me to remove all my body hair until I am 18 because she says if I do boys will want to get sexually involved. But I have no intention of becoming sexually involved. Problem is when I go swimming, I'm pretty sure all the other girls are like my sister and my mum as I see other girls going for showers and I am too embarrassed to join them.

Do all girls now remove all their body hair or am I worrying about nothing?

aunt honesty agony auntTalk to your mother again, tell her about what is happening when you go swimming, I think your mother is just worried about the fact that you might be wanting to get sexual with guys, she is being protective. Tell her the truth about the showers, and if she still refuses well you are old enough to go out and buy yourself a razor.

To be honest, I never understood who made that rule about body hair. It's like that foolish rule about pink for girls and blue for boys.

It is there for a reason. Make your own rules about it, and do follow the rules of this world. Soon they are going to tell you that hair on you head is bad.

Ivyblue agony aunt I assume your talking mainly pubic hair? It really is personal choice and IMHO nothing to be worried about. Personally I couldn't be bothered with paying good money for the full monty and rather opt for just a quick and tidy close trim. If you are brave enough to shower with other girls then you should be brave enough to stand up to any ridicule by having a light hearted response 'Hey my body, my bush and why are you even checking it out ?"Now if its you legs your talking about, well then I think mum should let you do it. thats nothing to do with sexualising yourself, its about self esteem.

In general women do reduce their body hair. Shave/ wax/depositary cream armpits and bikini line. School can be tough and being hairy would be something that a lot of your peers may laugh at. It's not right. But that's life. I would buy a razor and shave your legs, armpits and the hair on bikini line that shows outside of your swimming costume. Keep it hidden at home. Your family don't need to know.
