i really need some advice. My partner and I want a child, and we havent used contraception for almost 2 yrs and unfortunately no baby - yet. I am due on my period on 27th december. Being christmas I want to go out and celebrate with my friends, but i'm scared to drink alcohol just in case. I mean, the chances are im not pregnant but there's always a possibility and the earliest I can test would be christmas day - according to all the pregnancy sites. can alcohol harm the embryo? - I think I would have only conceived about a week ago if i am, i dont drink excessivly anyway, but im talking about 3 or 4 glasses of wine or the equivelant to. i dont want trying for a baby to take over my life as thats what it seems to be doing right now. and i just know if i stay home and ponder my period will come and i'll be gutted i missed out on celebrating for no reason. what should I do? please help x x x

Just have a small drink in moderation. You don't have to go berserk. Be mindful and if you can, then don't drink at all.

Take care and have a great Christmas

I think that just the fact that you are concerned for an embryo shows a great deal of responsibility on your part. Most young women dont even consider that much anymore. But I can tell you that as a mom of 3 children, have a good time at x-mas, and dont worry about a few drinks, when the time is right for you to conceive, you will, even if it is about to happen for you. Its not going to hurt you or the embryo if you were to have a few glasses of wine, if your really hoping for conception try to stay away from hard alcohol, it doesnt affect your chances of conceiving, its just ROUGHER on you in more ways than one. Good Luck!!! :)

even if you're happy for an ACTUAL baby to take over your life, i can completely understand not wanting the TRYING for a baby to take over your life. i've watched friends go through it, and it is so trying.

my advice is that you're better safe than sorry. if you're really inclined to have a drink, ask your doctor first. no one on this site (unless they tell you they have a medical background) is qualified to be giving you advice on what will or won't affect a developing fetus, and i hope you will think better than to rely on second- or third-hand information on a topic of such (potential) importance. you don't necessarily have to see a dr in person -- if you have a std physician, you can probably just call the nurse and ask. but seriously- this site isn't a good idea when you're looking for scientific advice.

DrPsych agony auntI am in the early stages of pregnancy so very jealous that you can drink anything...and of course you can in moderation. However, it is generally accepted that when you are trying for a baby your chances of conception are better when your lifestyle is ok - eat well, try not to worry too much about making babies and drink now and again...and good luck!

stina agony auntHi Anon,

On the upside of things, I have heard that drinking anything (or eating anything, for that matter) earlier than 8 weeks into the pregnancy has virtually no affect on the embryo. BUT DOUBLE CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR!!!!

If I were you, I would just stay away from any alcohol while trying to conceive. You should be at your healthiest when trying to have a baby, you know? Why would you want to complicate things just because you want to drink alcohol that one night? I'm sure that you'd still have a good time out with your friends and your husband without any alcohol being involved, don't you? If you're going to be a responsible parent, it needs to start when you feel you're ready to have the baby, don't you agree?

Have fun and take care! :)

A reader, anonymous, writes (19 December 2006):

Moderate consumption for women is considered on 4 oz glass of beer or wine or mixed drinks per day, not 3 or 4 glasses of wine.....if you want to celebrate with a drink, one small glass of wine with food should not hurt the embryo. However, why don't you put your mind at ease and buy and early pregnancy test, these are extremely accurate, or do you not want to know?

Why would you not want the baby to take over your life? Guess what it will, so maybe you might want to rethink getting pregnant for now.
