This is a stupid question, I know, but are condoms as effective if used when in a pool? (The kind we're using has spermicide; I'm not sure if chlorine will have any effect of it's effectiveness.) See, I've just gone off the pill because it was messing with my sex drive (I had none and it was awful) and so I've never really thought about condom issues before now. Thanks!

I actaully read it in my last issue of mental_floss.

Bascially it's a pill that a guy takes just a few hours before intercourse. The pill works immobilizing the tail of the sperm so they can't swim anywhere.

Here's some more info from the University of Massachusetts (http://www.umassmed.edu/pap/news/2005/01_31_05.aspx):

The target is a protein found only in sperm cells and it regulates the sperm’s ability to swim. If the protein is not activated, sperm are unable to move through the female reproductive tract to fertilize an egg. “The world is greatly in need of a better male contraceptive that is reversible, and I’m hopeful our partnering with SpermaTech will help meet this need,” said George B. Witman, PhD, the George F. Booth Chair in the Basic Sciences and professor of cell biology at UMMS, whose laboratory discovered the protein’s unique structure in sperm cells. “Because this protein is found only in sperm cells, blocking its action shouldn’t have any side effects, and that makes this a very exciting drug target.”

I mean "the only thing left were condoms" (not the ring).

Hey Bourne, I didn't see your reply until just now - thank you! I've tried about 4 different b/c pills, the patch and the ring. All of them had the same effect. The only thing left was the ring.

I can't wait until the male pill comes out! It's not hormone-based so it won't have any effect on my man's sex drive, either, and we won't have to put up with condoms anymore. :) I hear they're supposed to come out in w/in the next few years!

A male reader, Bourne +, writes (19 December 2006):

Bourne agony auntNo, condoms are not AS effective when use in a pool. There is an increased risk in condom breakage due to the chlorine in pool water.

Besides, sex in a pool is not very fun, most of the lubrication (either natural or from the condoms) rinses away very quickly and dry sex isn't good for either person.

There are several different types of b/c pills out there ranging from different dosages of different hormones. Have you talked to your doctor about other brands of pills that may not have the side effect of lowered libido?

Sexybum agony auntHiya

The quick answer to this question is no. Condoms are not as effective in a pool the chlorine could damage the condom and tear it so taht the protectiveness breaks!

It is not advisable for you to use a condom as sufficient protection in a pool.
