I wanted to tell her I liked her, but it came out wrong and now she thinks I hate her! How do I sort this out?

A male Italy age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I put myself in a little troubled situation, and I'm looking for advices of any kind: I told a classmate of mine i liked her exploiting the fact that I gave her a ride home.

A couple of things to know: it was a while i wanted to tell her that, but I'm humongously shy (and quite a bit on the nerd side, and also a bit awkward) and never even tried to get into a relationship before, so when the chance to overcome my shyness presented itself, I took it;

she got out a suffered love story about 3 months ago, and talking to mutual friends I found out she's a bit messed up on the emotional side (which I apparently hadn't picked up, or better, I had, but I hadn't thought as much);

also being terrible blunt as I am, I thought well to stylishly ride away with a whispered "ciao" after telling her that (no I didn't plan on doing that, it just came, and while working well in movies I don't think it works as well IRL);

I was made aware, again by common friends, that she was fairly shocked of the fact, which means I was successful in actually hiding my feelings, see the shy part on this (she even insisted I hated her, not sure how jokingly);

we still have one more year in school, so I could really use some advice sorting the situation out, one way or the other.

Thank you in advance, and sorry for the wall of text.
