I love him loads but sometimes I just feel like we do the same things, and I was joking and saying I have never been on a date because we starting going out in school and I said we should go out on dates rather than just go out. but he thinks the idea sounds stupid, I just dont want to let the relationship get all routine and make us fall out?  You got the right idea. To make him interested why dont you suggest something a bit naughty. i.e. somewhere where its only you two and you can wear something that turns him on.
Variety is the spice of life, if you bf doesnt click on in another 5 years he might find his girlfriend has become REALLY bored.
Good luck. ( I remember being a young lad in my early 20's we are a stubborn bunch, so be insistent!!! )
