Surely you can leave you friends for a few moments so you can introduce youself. Just say your going to get a drink or something. The long distance eye contact thing sounds good, try that.

 Sure, you could try that. Or you could let someone else take the lead in the conversation when you see her close by and excuse yourself for a few minutes and go up to her and say hi! You don't sound like the kind of person who's stuck for words so I'm sure you'll think up something to say to her. Go for it! ;o)
