writes:My boyfriend and I have sex without a condom. We were both virgins when we met and I'm on the Pill so there's no risk of STD's or pregnancy. However, I was reading my pamphlet for the Pill and at one point it said sex without a condom increases the risk of cervical cancer, but I couldn't find much online to explain this. Is it alright for us to continue having sex without a condom? What actually causes the cervical cancer by not using one?

The thing is that the studies look at women who have cervical cancer, and then also question what they use for contraception. Amongst women with cervical cancer, a higher percentage do not use condoms.
This is not to say that the birth control is dangerous, or that the condom itself helps you like it's a type of vitamin.
Cervical cancer is caused by a strand of the HPV virus. The HPV virus is common in every human body, and spreads through sex. There are SO many types of the virus, and only a few cause cervical cancer. Some cause genital warts. Most are never noticed and do not do any harm at all.
Women who use condoms are protected, at a certain level, from the HPV virus. I believe that is why the statistics show that a larger proportion of the women with cervical cancer are the ones who do not use condoms.
So, don't have one night stands without a condom. And, you can't be tested for HPV. There is no test for it. That is why women over the age of 25 who are sexually active should go to their doctor every so often for a check-up.

reader, anonymous, writes (4 June 2011): I think what they were reffering to was HPV also known as the Human Papoloma Virus. There are several different strands of hpv. One i know causes genital warts, another causes/ increases the risk of cervical cancer and there are other strands that do increase/cause cervical cancer but about 95 percent of the time these other strands go away on their own. I actually have hpv and was tested several times bcuz i had abnormal cervical cells. If you want you can research hpv. But chances are you do not have hpv. And its not caused by unprotected sex you get it if the other person has it.

 I agree with Cerberus here. Unless you both have never had any sexual contact with anybody else then you could still have a slight chance of getting an STI. Lots of people get STI's from oral sex. Honestly if you dont want to use condoms in a relationship it is always the smartest thing to go and get checked in a G.U.M clinic before you continue. I suggest that you and your boyfriend go for tests just to put your mind at ease and at least the nurse there can talk to you about your sexual health and make things clearer for you.

 yes using a condom eliminates the risk of catching the HPV virus from the man, which can lead to cervical cancer. but in recent years girls are now vaccinated against HPV so it will become less of a problem

reader, anonymous, writes (4 June 2011): To my knowledge it only increases the risk through the contraction of STD's. HPV is what causes cervical cancer, so sex without a condom increases that risk because it increases the risk of contracting HPV, which is pretty much undetectable in men.
OP the idea that neither of you can possibly have an STD because you're both virgins is a myth. You can get certain types from kissing. You can get STD's from hand jobs and oral too. The chances are lowered but not completely gone for virgins.
If you're worried you could go get tested to make sure other than that there's no enhanced risk.

hi there, so i'm going to be honest. i don't think not using a condom prevents you from getting cervical cancer. but i do know this, the pill does not prevent you from getting stds, i don't who told you this but they are wrong. i don't have any stds and never have, the pill will regulate your periods and prevent you from getting pregnant. so unless you trust your partner doesn't have any stds i would use a condom anyways. but do some research if you think i'm wrong.
