Hey,

I need tips on how to look older, I'm going to be 15 in the next few weeks and I look about ten. It's really annoying.

I've got chin length dark brown hair. but I'm rather short in height. Is there any way to look older without slapping on loads of make up ?

Thanks Xx

Ok, so decide on what color looks good on you. For me a light blue blows away my face to look like an older teen. Also ya dont over do the makeup. This looks fake and just plain gross, i ve had my days. lol. ya its not good. Maybe you should also consider to ditching the t-shirts w/words on them, and start shopping at real stores! Ya, wearing black nice pants makes you look important like someone who has an important job lol. Make sure they are not to baggy tho cuz then you will look sloppy. Get a manicure and pedicure if you have the money and time, cuz people think that your hands will look beautiful. Oh! And also dont act immature. Whining is a no no. Ya, sometimes u have to live in the real world, lol. Instead try to do everything w/a good attitude and u will find out that many people will respect u 4 that...hope this helps. :)

Hey, i think that you have to get a new hair cut ( extensions)because short hair will make you look like a little girl, and yes, you have to wear a lot of make up!!

Oh boy do I know how you feel! I HATE that I look so young! I doubt I'll ever be grateful for it (I'm unattractive anyway, it's not like I need people reminding me of it!). Anyway, I'd say that you should probably grow your hair out to shoulder length (but not any longer than that), and wear makeup daily. That's one thing that drives me crazy, because I absolutely hate putting it on, but it's necessary in order to look older. Don't forget at the very least to wear eyeliner.

Hey there!

Ladies, I just read some of your posts and I completely empathize! I actually googled "how to look older and sophisicated" when I came across this page. I am about to be 22 in a few weeks and I think I look about 15. People someimes ask if I'm still in high school and I'm about to get my B.A. I just try to think of it as having the fountain of youth. It definitely will come to our advantage one day. Till that moment for me, I wish there was a club for us to all hang out and relate! Best of luck. Time passes quick enough on its own so try not to obsess about it too much, just do things you enjoy and have fun!

birdynumnums agony auntHi Again,

I just remembered a few more things. Having the right size and fit is really important too. If your pants drag on the ground, it can give the effect of them simply being too big for you. the same with shirt and jacket sleeves. If you can, get clothes altered to fit you perfectly or buy a second hand sewing machine and learn to do it yourself - it is a skill that will be useful in the future. If you buy patterned clothing, try it on and check that the scale of the pattern doesn't swamp you. You should be wearing the clothes - they shouldn't be wearing you. If you wear a lot of detail - wear it up near your neck or down at your feet - but don't do both - it will draw the eye to both and emphasis your height. If you wear a belt with an outfit, keep it simple and in a similar colour family to the rest of what you are wearing whether it's large or small. If it is too obvious, it will cut you in half and draw attention to your size. For some reason, horizontal stripes are always in stores, and they are not kind to larger people or people who want to look taller. My sister is also petite and I think that she always looks very smart! It may sound like a lot of don'ts, but there are a lot more styles that you can wear when you are small than when you are large. My daughter was voted "Best-Dressed" in her senior year and has finished Uni. She is now attending one of the top fashion schools in the world in London, England, so she is my fashion guru. Most of the things I learned over time have been because I learned to sew and became a costume and wardrobe mistress for school plays. I hope that this hasn't been way too much info and that it has been in some way helpful. I promise not to write again! BUT, if you should ever have any specific questions, I can run them by my daughter and get back to you! So, in closing, Have a great time experimenting, trying on clothes and developing your own personal style - I bet you will look Fabulous!!!

YummyMummy agony auntI'm 22 hunni and look around 17, or so I get told. It's just one of those things.

Certain hair cuts and clothes can help you look a little older. If I dress up smart/casual I tend to look older. But if I'm having one of my trackie and tshirt days (lazy days) then I tend to look younger :)

The length of your hair isnt helping...it would be def making you look younger then what you are. Grow your hair a bit and get some layering perhaps. But dont grow your hair too long because quite often little girls have really long hair- so dont let it get as long to reach near your backside :)

Makeup will help. It always does with me. Im 18 and when I wear no makeup, people say I look like im 15 or 16. But when I do wear makeup, i look around 18.

Oops, sorry, I forgot one last thing. I also agree with you, slapping on too much makeup on a young face can have the opposite effect. You should stick with a touch of mascara, lipgloss and powder only. Any heavy eyeshadow would have the effect that you are trying to avoid, looking like you are trying to look older. Once again, You WILL be thankful for your youthful looks at some future point - even if you find it trying now!

Best of Luck Honey!

A female reader, birdynumnums Canada +, writes (15 August 2007):

birdynumnums agony aunt I agree, a really sophisticated haircut helps. If your Mom is agreeable, some highlights or low lights, but I'd stay away from blue or red, that trend could make you look even younger. Wear shoes or boots with a heel, not too tall though - the point is not to make it look like you are trying to look older, so the key here is to be subtle, not obvious. Don't wear any baby doll styles or mary-jane shoes. Try not to go overboard with styles that are a bit too sexy - too short skirts, low pants or deep cleavage. It's better to be a bit more conservative if you need to look a bit older. Low-rise pants and spagetti-strap tops could have the opposite effect if you are young looking for your age, they could make you look like a pre-teen who is trying to look older. Avoid the obvious, goth, punk, emo, etc. - they could draw unfavorable comparisons - "Aren't you a little young to be dressed like that?" If you wear glasses, try some sophiticated, artsy frames. If you like something but try it on are not comfortable in it, don't buy it. If you're not comfortable in it, you won't be able to pull it off. Don't follow the crowd too much, if you wear styles that are a little different and mature, you won't be compared unfavorably to the rest of the crowd. Study any fashion magazines you can get and pull out the pages that really appeal to you. Over a period of time, you will see that a certain style - your style - will become clearer as you go back through what you have saved. (This aslo works for interior design!). Lastly, if you are small in size and height, wear colours in the same tone from head to toe - say beige shirt, white t-shirt, taupe pants, it will elongate your body. Remember, it's free to try on clothing, and it can be a fun day out - so try as many different styles as you can! Take a Trusted friend along to help avoid fashion mistakes. Lastly, I know that it can be frustrating because my sister has always been very young-looking. When she went shopping for her Wedding gown when she was a journalist and in her thirties, the sales ladies asked her if she was shopping for her Prom dress! She is having the last laugh now and still looks ten years younger than she is.

flower girl agony auntTry a different hair cut, that can sometimes do the trick, not that people knowing your age comes down to how you look, it's more the way you carry yourself and your attitude.

Take care.xx.
