A male reader, anonymous, writes (16 October 2009):

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The model you read about was probably not fit for the job, they were looking for someone thinner, it is what it is. It's good to accept who you are, and know you are beautiful inside and out no matter what, however you have to face the facts too.

You have to be happy with your own self image, because people have different opinions. Some might think you are fat, normal, or skinny. Accept your weight and be happy about it, or do something to get to a point where you are satisfied.

A female reader, Ask oldersister United States + , writes (16 October 2009):

Ask oldersister agony auntPoster, if your doctor thinks you are a healthy size for your frame like my doctor tells me I am, then you are normal and don't let anyone make you feel bad over it. If your doctor tells you to lose 10lbs for your health, be glad it's something you can change with a little diet and exercise. Some of us are genetically stuck at a certain size and don't have that luxury. I'm not going to lie, you might be overweight, I don't know.

Don't compare yourself to others and learn to be confident within yourself, not by making comparisons. People are born with different genes and are going to be different sizes. People at either extreme of the weight/size spectrum get a lot of discrimination in the real world so be glad you are a size 8- you probably blend in. Just like you can't feel like a loser because you aren't Bill Gates, don't feel like shit because you aren't a super model. These people represent a very minute percentage of the population. Sorry I hijacked this post.

A female reader, Ask oldersister United States + , writes (16 October 2009):

Ask oldersister agony auntWhy is there a need to completely insult and put down anyone smaller than a size 4? Can't people learn to feel good about themselves without comparing and degrading another group of people? Not every size 2 person starves themselves, chainsmokes, and lives on caffeine, okay?

BIG REALITY CHECK: Some individuals below a size 4 are actually HEALTHY and NORMAL! NO, REALLY Ask oldersister? YES.

A size 2 is not skeletal or aneorexic if you have a small frame and high metabolism to go with it! Jesus Christ.

I absolutely cannot comment on anyone's weight if they are overweight without getting nailed to the cross but those very same people have no problem pointing out how much I weigh and making negative announcements about it:

Do you eat? Do you exercise a lot? Are you aneorexic? Here, have another donut. You need to find a feeder. OMG, have you lost more weight? Those pants look looser on you than before. Are you a vegetarian? You are eating candy..do you eat that a lot? No wonder you're so thin, you just eat candy! Have you ever tried Ensure? You would like Ensure, it's really healthy. Do you have a tapeworm? You eat a lot, you don't throw it up do you? My sister was bulemic so I don't judge. Are those weight loss pills? You don't do drugs, do you? You should put on some weight, fill out those jeans. How much do you weigh, can't be more than 90 lbs? That's unhealthy. Do you count calories? What do you eat normally? I notice you eat a lot at work, so you starve yourself at home? I saw you eating cheetos yesterday, is that normal? I bet you don't eat any carbs. I know this other girl that's a size zero, you're a size 0, right? I noticed you didn't eat much at lunch, that's really not healthy. You like strawberry soda? No wonder she's so thin, she lives on sugar. Do you eat breakfast? You know, coffee curbs your appetite. I'd rather be healthy than drink coffee all day. What cup of coffee are you on? Do you drink coffee all day? No, I've watched you, you can't only be on your second cup. I'm a size 6 but at least I'm not aneorexic. You're too thin. Are you a waif? You look like a waif, that was out in the 90's. Do you like the waif look? Do you know who Kate Moss is? She was gross. You're working late? You better get some dinner so you don't faint. You know, guys like to look at girls your size but they prefer women with a little meat on them in real life. My boyfriend says you are too thin. You have food in your refridgerator for your son, right? You feed your son, right? You'd look better if you gained some weight. You don't need to be so thin. What size is that dress? Let me see the size. How much body fat do you have? It's not healthy to be below 10%. You are having a 3rd beer? You probably shouldn't drink that much. Too skinny is disgusting, I'd rather be fat. You're only having half a sandwich? Not healthy. You look healthy but are you healthy? You don't diet? Do you have a thyroid problem? My grandmother did and didn't know it for 30 yrs. Black guys wouldn't like you. Do you get hit on by Asians? Oh yeah, all of us ladies in the office exercise together, we didn't think to include you.

There are many, many women out there that get harrassed like this daily due to society's misconception that skinny is unhealthy. Replace all those awful, judgemental assumptions and comments with the word "overweight" or "fat" and there would be lawsuits in the workplace like you wouldn't believe. Total reverse discrimination.

A person also does not overcome an insecurity by insulting another person who is different or possibly more healthy than they are. It's like saying I'm proud to be white because black people are uneducated trash. Very wrong.

and, in case you go find a bmi calculator, don't let the bmi standard that satin desire suggested to you of 22 induce hysteria, because actually 25 and over is considered overweight.

A female reader, miss anne thrope United States + , writes (16 October 2009):

"i just read this article about this model that got fired because she was to big and she was a size 8 (british size) thats the size i am"

think about it this way. it was her job (as it is a model's JOB to be often unrealistically and consistently) skinny. is that your job, professionally speaking? are you a model? models' bodies are supposed to *dissapear* so that the clothes will be the most noticable thing. do you want to disappear? are your friends, and your boyfriend(s) hoping only to spend time in the company of professional models? is that all you're worth as a human, a specific clothing size?

or think about it this way as well. you are suddenly dropped into a lawyer's/doctor's/psychiatrist's/etc office, expected to conduct the duties of a seasoned lawyer (or you'll be fired), and then you get fired because you don't know the first thing about this specific industry. does that mean you are stupid or not capable of achieving something else? does that mean you have no worth outside of something you did not intend on pursuing anyways? no.

bottom line is that models are sometimes just naturally tiny (a rarity in this modern world where food is not scarce), or they spend much of their time and energy in being as small as they are. most humans are not soooo skinny so easily. look around you and tell me how many model sized people are nearby... a handful of women work to attain this size as a means to earn money/fame. of course, if you're being literally paid to be tiny, then yes, you are possibly not small enough, but if you're just living your life like any non-model would be, then i'd certainly say that you are on the smaller end of possible sizes of the various sizes of (non-starving) human beings around the world. but remember that small doesn't necessarily equal attractive or beautiful. true confidence is one of the most beautiful qualities a person can have.

This is absolutely true. I know this from first hand experience because I USED TO BE A MODEL.

The modeling industry is EVIL. They bold-face encourage the models to skip meals, live on diet drinks and water, and exersise until they can fit into the size-0 sample clothes. They do not care about the health of their models, as long as they're able to work and not in the hospital or fainting from starvation, they're happy.

Unless your BMI is over 22%, you are not fat in the least.

A male reader, Illithid United States + , writes (15 October 2009):

Illithid agony auntThe model got fired because she was not what they were looking for. For some jobs, size 8 is too big to fit that particular image they're trying to create, while in some roles it's too thin. But in all cases, a model is picked ENTIRELY for how she looks and how she adheres to some ridiculous fantasy that marketing executives have for what kind of body they think people want to see.

You are a REAL person, and a perfectly normal size. Don't ever think you need to look like a model, because you CAN'T! They're all Photoshop and special effects anyway, and most are anorexic. If anything, you're already on the thin side.

I want you to watch this video from Dove and see just how fake these models are in the first place:

A female reader, AuntyEm United Kingdom + , writes (15 October 2009):

AuntyEm agony auntNo your not fat...ok? Size 8 isn't fat and if you believe everything you read in magazines your going to be pretty neurotic and shallow by the time you grow up.

Everybody knows supermodels starve themselves, live on cigarettes and coffee and promote an unrealistic lifestyle. Fashion and beauty advertising is heavily manipulated to make it appear better.

For example mascara adverts always show models wearing fake eyelash inserts (not something you buy with your average mascara) Shampoo and hair coloring adverts always show models who have had their hair maticulously styled by top hair stylists (don't know about you but when i was or colour my hair, it never turns out like on the ad's because I don't have a west end stylist in my closet :-))

There are also countless stories of models who border on anorexia or bullimia to try to stay thin. It's not healthy and it could kill you!!

The average size in the uk is 12-14 so in effect your smaller...so quit worrying.
