How do we get the pill for my girlfriend?

A male United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

My girlfriend and I have been dating for just short of a year now. We are both sixteen and live in the US. We were both virgins before we started dating and just had our first time a while back. We had talked about it before and bought condoms and everything and thought we were ready. In the heat of the moment she asked me to put it in so I put it in without the condom. I quickly pulled out and put on the condom, but now I'm worried we'll get wrapped up in the moment and not use a condom. We've decided we wont some better protection just in case that happens. We want to try the pill and so I've found the nearest free birth control clinic, but we're not sure what we have to have to get the pill. Does she have to have a family member with her? Can she get the pill there or does she have to go to the doctors office to get a prescription? Any information would be helpful.

k_c100 agony auntIt is a great thing that you are both being so sensible so well done!

Basically she doesnt need anything at all to get the pill - all she needs is to go in and see the doctor. I'm not 100% certain how the birth control clinics work in the US but if they are anything like the family planning clinics in the UK then all you will have to do is go in to the clinic, the doctors in there will have a chat with your girlfriend and then prescribe her the best method of birth control that they think will suit her. Then she will have to take the prescription to a local pharmacy and pick it up - simple as that!

There really is nothing to be worried about or scared about - the doctors will be very helpful and will answer any queries she (or you) might have. Any girl of any age can go to the doctors and get contraception, they do not need to take anything with them to "qualify" for it. Because she is 16, and is in a long term relationship then the doctors will be pretty easy going on her and it will be a nice quick and easy process to get hold of it. All they will do is ask her a few questions - such as "are you having regular sex", "are you in a long term relationship", "are you on any other medication", "are you using condoms" etc. Nothing they ask is massively embarassing or anything like that!

And if your girlfriend has any other little side problems she would like sorting out - e.g. if she has spots, or if she has heavy periods/bad period pain - it is worth mentioning these sorts of things because the right type of pill can actually help/reduce these things.

I hope this helps and good luck!

kellyxxx agony auntNot sure how it works in america but she should be able to get it alone. Just telephone the clini you have found and ask them about it. Or telephone the doctors surgery and see what there procedures are. If she has to have an adult with her (which is unlikely) then tell her to confide in a family member. X
