I'm think I'm really depressed. I've been thinking about life, about how the good guys die. MLK-shot, JFK-shot, John Lennon-shot, Reagen-wounded. I think about how there's no god. I'm the funny guy in school, everyone thinks I'm happy. Reminds me of a joke. A man goes to the doctors, says 'Doc I'm depressed, life seems pointless.' doctor says 'the great clown Palo is in town, go see him you will be happy then. The man starts to cry. 'but doc I AM Palo'.

I need you to tell me something that will make me happy. How can I stop feeling so down?

Grimm, that sounds like some party!! I'll be surprised if your 'putrid carcass' rant is bettered by anyone on DC all summer.

And Dylan - on behalf of my nation, I'd like to apologise for the existence of Chris de Burgh. And Bono while I'm at it.

k_c100 agony auntI'll explain it to you - the gunman had a very good aim! Stop getting worked up about the past and think about your own future - we all die one day and at least John Lennon did something with his life! At this rate you will spend the rest of your life wanting answers about the past and you will forget to do anything productive with your own life!

GrimmReality agony auntWhat the hell are you griping about kid, you didn't have to live through Reagan!

Reagan deserves nothing but contempt for his policies...I think you need to go back to history class.

Alexander Haig almost pulled off a coup because our bumbling idiot government could figure out the line of succession in case the putrid carcass didnt wake up. The only bad thing about that day was that the job didn't get finished!

Reagan destroyed millions of lives worldwide by being A talking robot. He was an even worse president than he was an actor, and no one thought that piece of garbage could pull it off but he did. His messing with dairy price supports oin the Mid 80's bankrupted my family.

June 5 2004 was one day that I loved...it was the day that Reagan died. I live near his hometown of Tampico Illinois...We had a THREE DAY Ronald Reagan's Dead Dance party and Wet T-shirt contest. and we took turns spitting on his statue...I still have the pictures!

He is remembered by any intelligent American the same way the English so fondly remember Oswald Mosley

Now if that doesent make you smile....

A female reader, k_c100 United Kingdom +, writes (4 August 2009):

k_c100 agony auntHere's something that should make you happy - you are young, alive and free to do whatever you choose in life. You have a family and friends who love you. You have a roof over your head, food and water. That is a lot more than millions of people around the world have. But if that still doesnt work, then let me tell you a story about my friend, this always cheers me up and makes me feel thankful for what I have.

Aged 6, my friends mum dies in a tragic accident, she had schizophrenia and no-one really knows quite what happened but she drowned in a lake. He was brought up by his dad along with his older brother, and they were a really close family. In 2005, his dad was diagnosed with cancer. After a long struggle against it, his dad dies in the summer of 2006. So him and his brother are left alone, aged 19 and 21, with no other family members in the UK. The next few months were the worst few months of his life, imagine being having no parents left aged 19, no-one to see you graduate or get married.

So at this point most people would just completely shut down and lose all interest in living. But my friend is now starting his final year at University where he is studying physics, he has a wonderful girlfriend and he is making the most of his life. So despite circumstances that would knock most of us flat out, he has picked himself up and just got on with life, he is quite possibly the bravest and strongest person I know.

When I think of everything he has been through and the fact that he has come out of it all and he is still a happy, wonderful, kind person, it makes me realise just how lucky I am to have everything that I have and I should never take it for granted for 1 minute. Yes sometimes life throws difficult things at us and there will always be times when we feel down, but the important thing is to look at the good things we have in our lives and feel lucky to have them. The more you appreciate the little things in life, the happier you will be from day to day.

There are lots of bad things in this world, but there are also lots of good things. Like love, friendship, laughter....life isnt so bad really you just need to look for the good things instead of focusing on the bad. You are still very young and you have your whole life to look fowards to - dont waste any minute feeling down about things that happen to other people; get out there and live your life. Time is short, and every minute we have is precious. Make the most of it, do whatever makes you happy.

I hope this helps!

A reader, anonymous, writes (4 August 2009):

The good guys die? True. Everyone dies.

But the examples you offered? MLK - no argument there, a tragic loss. John Lennon - complex, fascinating, troubled character, not remembered with great fondness by his eldest son.

Reagan? A good guy? Hundreds of thousands of widows and orphans in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Chile etc would beg to differ. While not wishing to speak ill of the dead, dying does not retrospectively make a mass murderer a better person.

JFK? No better. Inexplicably venerated as some sort of liberal icon by legions of woolly-minded ageing hippies with a rather simplistic view of the world, the man enthusiastically invaded Vietnam, with results I'm sure you've heard all about (If not, google it. The Vietnam War.)

Enough of the political rant. As to your depression: quiet-echo has made several excellent points. You're sensitive to the world, a good thing to be. You probably get angry at news bulletins rather than just shrugging your shoulders and going 'oh, whatever.'

Feeling down happens to everyone at some stage. It'll come and go. Enjoy your life, and count your blessings.

Good luck
