How can I ask my parents for birth control?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I'm 15 years old and I want birth control. I'm not a virgin but I'm not having sex regulary, I just want it just in case something ever comes up. Also, to help regulate my period. The problem is I don't know how to ask my parents for them because my parents especially my mom are very judgemental and assume stuff with out really knowing the facts. How can I ask my mom for birth control without making her think I'm sexually active? Is there even a way? I can't really say to her "I want it just in case something comes up mom..." I'm just not open with her about guys like that. What do you think I should say ?

A female reader, Mrs. Mom United States +, writes (13 March 2009):

Mrs. Mom agony auntHmmm. That's a tough one! I think you can just go to Planned Parenthood, and they will help you get birth control. I don't believe you need your parents' consent, but that may vary from state to state. Call them up and find out!

If this isn't an option, just go to your mom and give it your best shot. Don't react emotionally if she implies that you're having sex. Tell her you're trying to be responsible and make sure you don't get pregnant if you should decide to have sex. She might actually find that argument persuasive, especially if you act calm and serious.

May I remind you that you are only 15... And it is called using a condom. You say that you are not sexually active, but you are. If you had sex, you are sexually active. And I believe that the "help you regulate your period" is just an excuse/cover-up to hide the fact that youre a slut at 15 years of age. Legally, you shouldn't be having sex, due to the fact that it is against the law. Besides asking your mom for birth control, my advise is to not be such a slut at a young age and stop having sex for awhile, or use a condom and save yourself the hassle of confronting your parents about it. If the condom breaks, it is your own fault for risking having sex. C'mon, lets be realistic here, YOUR'E 15! You are still a child. EATCHYOWHOPPA!!!

lgonzal2 agony auntWell if you are a girl and have heavy periods where you bleed through your pants and cannot control it. That is where your parents especially a mother can understand your want for the pill.

well its not the right thing to do, BUT you dont need to tell them you are on the pill. you can go yourself to a clinic and get birth control without them. the acne and period thing is (no offense) a dumb excussp your parents probley arent that stuipd. either tell them your sexual active and want to be on the pill so you dont get knocked up (still use condoms) from a boy or you can take the lying deciving way out, and take yourself and get your own. make sure you still use condoms to prevent stds and stis. birth control is not 100% alone. nothing really is. remeber that good luck and let me know how it goes

lgonzal2 agony auntI think you should tell your mom that you heard Birth control pills can lessen your periods and can help with acne. Just tell her you want to when you will get your period and you think it will be helpful for you. She will ask if you are sexually active, just tell her no and that thats not all you want if for.
