 I think he already likes you. Why don't YOU ask him on a date? Times are changing for you ladies, you don't want to let it fly by and see him be with or even eventually marry someone else you know.
If he says "I just wanna be friends" then at least you tried, you can move on and find another one with no regrets that you didnt try. later if he come back when your getting married, you camn say, that you tried but he wanted to be friends.
Just tell him over a nice dinner somwhere you like him and you want to take it to take it to another level. i'm sure it will rock his socks off!
simple plane english is always better than signs that take ages and can be interpreted wrong.

The signs dont really apply to you since he is your best friend. just playfully ask him, if he stumbles and says no then no, if there's a pause or something then yea.
