A female United Kingdom, anonymous writes:

I have a 30F chest, however it only looks about a 32C, the other day, my friends were going round asking what bra size we all were, and I told one of them she didn't believe me at all. And although i told her not to tell anyone, i think she told some of the others, who now also think i was lying.

What can I do to rectify this?

I am a 30ff, and no-one really thinks that I am telling the truth. It is more believable for a woman to be overweight and a 40FF than a slim 30ff with a good cleavage!! It is hard for women like us who cannot go into a high street shop (apart from Bravissmo) and not find our size as we are abnormal. It can happen, no matter what people think! you should not have to show it off or prove it, like me, you are what you are, no matter what people think.

And before others judge, until you are told professionally that you are THIS size, and that you will find it difficult, no-one will understand.

Just remembered something my mum told me after my first underwired bra fitting, I ended up with a chuffing great granny bra due to wierd sizing issues.. Tiny titties always want big boobs and big boobs always want tiny titties.. which ever way you must make sure they are always fitted! I have finally realised how right she was to stick to this rule and now don't buy a bra without fitting as styles and makes vary as much as you body changes. I went through a period of just buying the biggest cup size I could in the pretty styles I like but they never fit right and I now get fitted and shop at Bravissimo and no longer get lumpy bumps. I' a 30FF at the mo but no one would guess so because a properly fitting bra keeps your shape better.

Don't worry i'm a 32D and not even a teen yet. No one believes me when I tell them either. They just compare me to other girls, but you shouldn't care. You are who you are and nobody can change that.

I'm so glad to hear that i'm not alone! I know exactly how a lot of you feel, and I did exactly what another person who posted did, and just showed anyone who had some sort of problem the label in my bra. All bra sizes are proportional and if people don't realise that, they're clearly just ignorant, and really not worth your time. x

I know exactly what you mean - I'm a 28ff, and they look smaller because you'll have a naturally smaller ribcage and your breasts sit a bit more to the side so they're not up in peoples faces. people seem to think bug cleavage = big boobs and its not true. But let people make they're own assumptions, the people that matter will believe you x

I know exactly what you are talking about, i have the same problem.. Although i have to get all of my bra's taken in further sizes to fit!

My underbust is 23.5" so apparently that makes me a 26" or size 4 back. Then across my bust measures 32.5". Which would make my 32E or 30F bra's(if i can find any)into a 26G which i can not buy anywhere!

I can never tell people my bra size because although my boobs are slightly larger are still very proportionate, i dont like how everyone assumes that they are huge when i say im a FF or G cup! They are only a hand full lol.

A female reader, bluestrawberry United Kingdom +, writes (2 July 2009):

hi, i have exactly the same problem. i started off as a 30DD (which came as a shock when i first found out, my boobs are pretty small) but recently the bras i had been buying were not fitting correctly. so i went and got my size checked yesterday and found out i had gone up to 30f. the bras fit perfectly but when i told one of my friends she just laughed and said "theres no way you can be bigger than my mum".

most women have no idea what their actual bra size is because a lot of fitters dont know what they are doing. when i got fitted in marks and spencers they told me i was a 34b but they were completely wrong.

30f isnt big. it just sounds big!

A female reader, ShellyAnne United States +, writes (14 April 2009):

I am a 30FF. I believe you. I get the weird looks to when people hear about my bra size. A lot of women are women are wearing incorrect bra sizes. For example, although my cups would fit in a 34DD, the straps would be to loose and the weight of the bra would push the bra up my back - not classy.

Let me break it down for you that do not understand how bra sizes are measured.

30 is the band size. Take a tape measure around your rib cage below your breasts. Add 5 to get your band size - 30, 32,34 etc. If you get an odd number, add one.

Next take the measurement around the fullest part of your bust line. Take the difference between the previous measurement and the this one. This is you cup size.

1 inch, your cup size is A

2 inches, your cup size is B

3 inches, your cup size is C

4 inches, your cup size is D

5 inches, your cup size is DD

6 inches, your cup size is F

7 inches, your cup size is FF

I find that people that only ignorant folks are surprised to hear uncommon bra sizes. There are women like us that are petite but have naturally large breasts. All women in my family have this build.

hay, i have exactly the same reaction, i got measured today at bravissimo and they told me im a 28H, in the past i have always been measured to be a 30F as this was the closest to my size but still wasnt quite right... the 28H fits perfectly. (looks like i will only be shopping at bravissiomo now!) Im a slim size 8 and have a small back, hence the 28. my boobs arent huge but i guess in comparison to my small frame they are.

the way it works is that the cup size is in comparison to the back size, so the cup of a 32d isnt as big as the cup of a 38d. most people dont understand this but im sure if they look at the sizes in comparison that they would believe you..

A female reader, joannaC Australia +, writes (10 September 2008):

I'm a 30FF or 32E, and nobody has ever believed me either. I've been measured as 36B, 34C, 38B ... I don't look enormous, I'm 5'7 and slim but obviously female.

I think it's not just about the difference between the under-chest measurement and the across the chest one, but also things like back length and the shape of your boobs. These are ignored when being measured. I have long legs and so a high waist - my boobs sit up high so I always have to adjust the shoulder straps to the shortest length and often have to cut them and sew them shorter. I need a firm fit across my small back because these short shoulder straps aren't going to absorb much of the weight of the front and the back will ride up otherwise. I need a large cup because all of my chest is up and front - they're high and so can't spread out on the sides much.

A reader, anonymous, writes (28 August 2008):

I know this question is really old, but, dude, ignore everyone who's telling you you're crazy or trying to tell you how to 'measure' your size. No measuring system works accurately for bras. If anything, you should just measure underneath your bras and round that to the nearest whole number to find your band size - no adding four or five inches.

I also wear a 'weird' size, 28FF, despite looking perfectly normal. People look at me and think I'm a 34C or D. I never tell people my bra size because I know I'll just have to go through a lot embarrassing explanation: 'Well, I got sized as a 32DD, but the band was too big, and a 32DD is the same cup volume as a 30DDD/E or 28F so it's really not that huge...' blah blah blah (never mind that people already think that 32DD is somehow weird or improbable). Luckily for us, a lot more stores are starting to offer 28s and 30s in larger cup sizes, and shops like Bravissimo are spreading the word that sizes like 28G, 32HH, and 34F aren't unusual at all - it's just that most women wear the wrong size. Band sizes 28-32 would be a lot more popular than they are if fitters used the right methods and if places like Victoria's Secret stopped spreading false information. (I've yet to see a VS model in a correctly sized bra - they all have bands two sizes too big and usually cups that are too small. Those skinny models do not even wear 32s, let alone 34s!)

Oh My God, this is exactly the same reaction I had when a friend of mine found out what size i was!!.... now i just keep my mouth shut, this has nothing to do with my self confidence it just saves the long conversation about how i cant possibly be that size, last time i ended up taking my top off and showing her that my bra fit well and then showed her the tag, that shut her up!! I'd like to point out at this point that she was a close friend not some random off the street!

I am very happy with my shape and size, I am a 30F/30FF dependant on cut, 5'3'' tall, wear a size 8 top and size 8/10 jeans. Most people dont understand that as your back gets smaller the cup gets bigger coz there's less space for all the fat (as it were!) to go, everything gets pushed out the front.

Seriously, who cares what everyone else thinks, i've had people make comments about my size and proportions since i was about 14, i'm now 24.

Dont 'rectify' it, enjoy it!!

I would be happy to provide you with the correct average bra size, because if you measured the fullest part of your bust, (thats around your back and accross your nipples), then your a 32b average. However to it into an F there must be some miscalculation somwhere.... "

My bust size is 91/92cm across the fullest part wearing a non padded bra. Underneah the bust 67cm. The difference is about25cms, which is G65 japanese size and about 30E/30F uk size. I got professionally measured too. Do check out the bra calculator here.

I wear a 30F bra too, and I have had people disbelieve my bra size. No-one has outright accused me of lying though. To those of you who made comments about tiny waifs with massive boobs, it really isn't like that. Yeah, we're slim and busty, but nothing out of the ordinary. People don't realise that cup sizes are relative to the band size of the bra. an F cup isn't always huge. In fact, it can look quite small, especially if you're not wearing a figure hugging top.

This model is a 30F: http://www.bravissimo.com/products/lingerie/everyday-essentials/fantasie/balconette-bras/fac6-details.aspx?colour=White

http://www.bravissimo.com/products/lingerie/seam-free/panache/balconette-bras/pn84-details.aspx?colour=Chocolate

As you can see, she is slim and busty, but by no means a freak of nature. Chances are, you know a few people with that figure who wear a C/D cup, and they probably have no idea that they're wearing the wrong size.

Hi Ladies,

It is interesting and reassuring to read about other womens reactions to boobs.

I was always envious of a friend who was 5 ft 6 and had a narrow back. She was a 32D which looked big with the thin back. I gained weight and now take a 40B or C, but I know that this is fat and that when I lose weight I will be back down to a 34B.

One question though, what does it feel like to be a 32D? Are they heavy?

I'm 27 inches underneath the bust and 37 chest. I wear a 30f bra. In other words i'm very curvy for a small frammed girl. I don't mind people getting all jealous and that, i think they do it because of jealousy and their own insecurity. Who said you can't be slim and curvy at the same time. Although its not all the same with slim looking girls and we are in the minority group. We are all built differently which is the works of our genes and heredity. There's nothing much i can do for what others think and say, so, just ignore them. Anyway, people who don't know you won't appreciate who you are, nevermind the 'shell'. pgissyd agony auntHi there, Im a 36gg sometimes 36 h. but if I wear a 38 I go down to an Fcup. it really does depend on where you go to get mesured, my advice is get measured in EVERY store you go to buy a bra, so you know your getting the right size for the brand. you will probably end up with several different size bras in you drawer, but at least they will be the correct size according to brand. Although I wear a large cup, I dont look big, I have an hour glass figure, and Im 5'7" tall. So you look at 5'1" Jordan with her dd cup and she looks HUGE, but you look at me with my G cup and I look average. Why does i bother you what your friends hink of your bra size? Its not them that have to put up with the back ache and the stares from guys. dont worry about it, let them get on with their lives and you get on with knowing you are voluptuos. And please IGNORE the first few posters on this, they obviously have no idea what they are talking about xxxx

Only one thing I noticed though, your measurements are 27 under and 32 round? have you measured the fullest part or have you measured above your bust? I would be happy to provide you with the correct average bra size, because if you measured the fullest part of your bust, (thats around your back and accross your nipples), then your a 32b average. Okay if you are 27 inches under the bust and 33 around the boobs, I think you should try a 30C. I had those measurements a few years ago and I wore a 30C.

Some companies just use the underbust measurement but the problem with this is your ribcage expands upwards and so you need to add a few inches to take this into account. Anywhere from 3-5 inches depending on your backsize. I always found adding 3-4 inches worked best and then subtract the band size from the bust measurement to find the cup size.

Hope this helps.

i'm sure she has been accurately measured, and you're assumption that she hasn't is actually quite amusing, considering that you can't actually see her.

i'm 18, and i'm a 30F, though i tend to wear a 32E becuase they're much easier to find. People tend to guess me at about a D/DD.. my breasts don't look that large - i just happen to have average, if a little on the bigger side, sized breasts and hips - and a very tiny back and waist.

If you're friends don't believe you, they can't have a huge amount of trust in you - and if they're that bothered about you're bra size i suggest they find a hobby.

Good luck :)

Yeah, well my bras had been getting too small, hence me going to get remeasured, but I expected to be a 34C or 34D, but, I suppose with the back size being smaller, like people have been sayng, the size of the cup of a 32E is similar to that of a 34D or 34DD, so I'm only a bit larger than I expected.

Another thing that's interesting is that (independent of any pregnancy) many women's breasts carry on growing until they're 21, so when I got measured as a 34B when I was 15, I pretty much thought that was it.... I wonder how many others make the same mistake.

La Senza sizes are different to marks and Spencer’s... But not that different.

It my be you actually are a 32 back size. It's whatever’s comfortable really... If you actually are a 32E the equivalent (just about) in a 34 would be 34DD.

I had been wearing a 34B for a good amount of years but it turns out I was a 32DD and I didn't even realise the bra was too small. So yeah. Could happen

I'm quite slim too, I wear a UK size 12 and am tall (5'10" ish) and don't look at all top heavy! What I now find is that I'll have to buy plus size bras! With so many people now saying they need D or bigger, I wonder why manufacturers haven't twigged onto this.

I've just had my daughter measured at Bravissimo and they have fitted her as a 28e - she wears size 10 clothes and doesn't look like she has huge boobs - she just has a really nice shape to her (and she's only 14) - what odd balls your friends are - do they think that having a cup size above C makes you more or less desirable?? It's just a manufacturer's sizing after all - I wears size 8 jeans from Per Una and size 12-14 from New Look - so am I lying if I say my jeans are size 8? It's just a number - tell your friends to go and get fitted for a bra properly and they too can have a new size to boast about!

The people on here doubting she's a 30F are absolutely ridiculous! Just because she's in the minority sizing group doesn't mean she's lying about it... It really doesn't help when people sneer saying "err I really doubt you are a 30F" Have you ever seen her?! I'm a 32JJ and can't find a bra that fits for love nor money and I would gladly welcome all those who doubt that she can have 30F's to take my boobs off my hands for a day and see how quick you are to doubt... and before you start saying you can't possibly be a 32JJ, think about why on earth somebody would lie about it?

Your friend is probably in awe of you. i am also a size 30f and my friends are also shocked at this, but not out of envy but because i am a small build i look in proportion to my body size. You don't need to do anything to rectify this or justify yuorself to anyone. you are who you are and as long as your happy then that all that matters.

Wow, the people who are doubting you are so rude and obviously understand nothing about bra sizes. I wear a 28FF and my chest is 36" (quite normal). I look nothing like Jessica Rabbit or a porn star, and I can stand up quite fine. People guess that I'm a 34C... because they don't understand bra sizes! It's so frustrating to have people think I'm lying or don't know what I'm talking about. So I definitely commiserate.

Tell your friends they're ignorant, then invite them to go with you for a decent fitting for themselves at a lingerie store (department store fitters often are poorly trained).

I too wear a Fantasie 30F after a professional fitting, after years of 34D and a department store 32DD (I gasped at the thought of a DD, so the fitter probably didn't want to go higher, and she sold me a sort of old-lady bra).

I'm finally free of shoulder and neck pain. A 30F supports from below so well that it keeps the bounce to a sexy minimum and holds my bust about an inch higher. I look slimmer and younger because my waistline is no longer obscured.

And yes, one can be slim (I'm a size 6) and have very big breasts. They can be inconspicuous if they're broad rather than protruding. Enjoy your good fortune and educate your envious friends.

I'm supposedly a 36DD according to standard measurements, I've worn all sorts of sizes and have found that bras from different retailers come in all shapes and sizes! So I could be a 36E in one shop and then a 38DD in another. My latest purchase was the new Katie Price range aka Jordan very pretty lingerie. So I looked carefully at the sizes and thought the 36F looked about right, tried it on it was fine across the back but the cup size was too small! I changed it then for the 36G!!! The thing is no-one believes that it's a G cup, I don't care as long as I'm comfortable. I get trouble finding tops to fit as well, being only 5ft 1" its really difficult to accommodate my boobs and I end up wearing a size 18 top, when I'm a size 12 on the bottom. Freakish I know but we are all different, so flaunt your curves like I do!!!

A female reader, sparklingfairy2 United Kingdom +, writes (9 April 2007):

According to experts anywhere between 70% 85% of women are wearing the wrong brasize. Untill I was measured prfessionally by Bavissimo I was wearing 32C/D sized bras, when they told me I was a 28FF i couldn't belive it; but when i tried one of their bras on it fitted much better than the ones i'd been wearing previously.

I too have had bra fittings since then where the "professional" bra fitter has told me I am a 32C when I have been standing there in a 30F asking is the back size slightly too big, she agreed that it was, yet still insisted on saying that "according to her measurements i MUST be a 32C".

With "professionals" like this its hardly any wonder women wear the wrong bra size. I suggest Bravissimo http://www.bravissimo.com/bravissimo/info/3Step.aspx?language=en-GB or John Lewis as their service is far more accurate.

Just because you have a smaller waistband (i.e. just under the bust width) means that the cup size goes up automatically. A 32D bra will have roughly the same amount of space for the breast as a 36B but the band will be longer to fit round a larger back.

There are many people who have the preconception that larger cup sized people are obviously so, but infact women have far larger breasts than others can be wearing a smaller cup size than someone with the smaller breasts and a smaller back.

If this responce doesn't make sense please say, I also hope I have not offended anyone in saying what I have. From personal experience I know what it is like to be looked at like i'm lying when i say what my brasize is.

Furthermore I find that Lingerie companies do not make enough pretty bras for smaller back sizes and I am currently exploring with the idea of becoming a Lingerie designer myself to rectify this problem. If anybody has any ideas regarding what they would like to see in a bra for larger cup sizes I would welcome any advice.

Many thanks.

Immature people behave like this. No doubt there is an element of jealousy and another of insecurity. Being a girl yourself you know how conscious you are of how everything looks. Why worry about your own body when you can make fun of someone elses eh? That's all they are doing. The problem here is with them, not you. Don't forget that =)

I am a 30F too and no one can ever believe me. The lady at Belk's who "professionally" measured me said I was a 34B. I laughed at first cuz I thought she was joking- then realized she wasn't. When she brought me a 34C bra it barely covered my nipples and she couldn't believe the measurments could be that wrong! Anyhow, roll with it. That is all you can do. ps- if you ever try to breastfeed be prepared for IMPOSSIBLE boobies. You will not find a bra. Just warning you. lol. At the height of my breastfeeding boob size I was like a 32JJ or something. I mean, bra makers can't count that high in the lower bandwidths.

I have just been measured as a 30F too. Anon is totally right. The cup size is in proportion to the back size, so if you're only a 30, then the actual size of the cup in a 30F bra is the same as the cup on 34D / 36C.

I'm now finding it really hard to find nice bras that don't look grannyish! Your friends are clearly jealous. And personally I would rather mine were slightly smaller.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (16 November 2006):

I have a similar problem. I am a 30 FF (professionall measured every 6 months). To the person who said you must be like Jessica Rabbit - no. The number is your back size under the bust not your waist doesn't mean your waist. No one has ever guessed I'm the size I am because as seen here a lot of people don't understand the sizing system. I'm 23 and never met a single person who would say I'm a 30FF on seeing me because they have in their head an image of what a FF should look like - which is wrong if your backsize is as small as it is. People hear anything above DD and have an image of Baywatch fake breasts in their minds. This is not the case. There is nothing wrong with being the size you are and the reason they probably don't believe you is that they don't understand how it works themselves. Can't remember the exact figure but a high proportion of women don't wear the right bra size. If you have been properly measured then maybe you should point this out to them and suggest they get professionally measured because they are probably wearing the wrong sizes!

To all the people here who doubt someone can be a 30F i want to ask why? Is it so hard to believe that you can be slim in the back and have a large bust? Or do they think that to have large breasts you automatically have to have a large bust size. Because of the miss understanding that large breasts means a large number in my bra size people regularly assume I have to be a 36 or 38 and I think most of my friends would guess at a D or DD. If I were to put that size on I'd get no support and be lost in the cup.

My advice if they still don't believe you is to ignore them. They are obviously jealous and immature. They'll get over it and if they don't I feel sorry for them. Just be happy in yourself and your own body.

Not to annoy you or anything, but over at the Victoria's Secret that I shop at they have professionals on staff to accurately measure chest size. Maybe a lingerie store by you has the same help available. You could try calling them to see about it. Again, I didn't say this to annoy you (!!!). :)

i've measured.... like a previous post suggested.. and I got a 27 (underneath boobs) 33 (on boobs). However, when I went to try on a 28B bra, it was MILES too small! and my boobs were squeezing out all over the place! I also tried on a 30B, which was also too small.

Measure yourself to make sure you are wearing the right size. Measure underneath your boobs around your back and that is the number. Measure around your boobs to get the letter. For every 2 numbers, that is the letter size. Example: I am a 31 underneath my boobs and a 38 around my boobs. 32,33 B 34,35 C 36,37 D 38 DD

30F... how do you stand up? That would mean you have an INCREDIBLY small waist and huge boobs... like Jessica Rabbit.

Well, enjoy them while you can.
