Do guys always have a back up girl if they can't get with you?

Do guys always have a back up girl if they can't get with you? I met this guy at a cafe and we talked and we hit it off real good, we kind of dated but we were never in a relationship. However, the last month he's met another girl at the same cafe. He told me about it, but the thing is he's been spending time with her instead of me now even though he tells me he misses me. Am I wrong to make assumptions that he has a back up girl?
