A female reader, Honeypie United States + , writes (30 June 2012):

Honeypie agony auntIf you just have a single pimple on your face then yes, toothpaste can help, but long term use and all over the face I wouldn't advice it. Toothpaste is NOT made for skin care. It is made for tooth-care and gum-care.

I would honestly suggest that you get a referral to a dermatologist FIRST. Before you experiment too much with your skin.

The fact is that drinking a good amount of water (about 2 liters/8 cups a day), cutting deep-fried foods, over processed food, sugar, coffee to a minimum might do more, at least long term.

Choose cosmetics labeled "noncomedogenic" or "oil-free."

Avoid picking pimples; it increases inflammation and can cause scarring.

Wash your skin daily (twice a day) with a gentle face soap, I like Clinique, but for a cheaper version you might want to try Simple Facial Wash Gel, Cetaphil Cleanser, Philosophy Purity Made Simple. It all depends on your skin type. Some are happy with a simple bar of face soap.

Get a GOOD moisturizer. One suited for your skin type. Use it twice daily as well.

Also something as simple as taking your vitamins can make a difference, I believe Zinc is good for the skin, but again I would talk to your dermatologist about the dose.

Anonymous 123 agony auntI dont know about toothpaste but I use a medicated face wash with salicylic acid and it works just fine. I used to have the odd pimple but ever since I stated using the face wash, I have great skin with absolutely no pimples!

Shadow Rose agony auntAnd to avoid returning pimples, I've found that drinking lots of water and avoiding high starch/grease/fat foods, I can have clearer skin. I only ever get very miniscule pimples on my nose during my time of the month, other than that. Nothing.

I tried this before and it made it worse! Maybe it was the kind of toothpaste I used? But you can always give it a try. In my opinon spot treatments with benzoyl peroxide work (but can be harsh) or that have a higher level of salicylic acid work the best. Also, if you can find a toner with glycolic acid, which are usually used in anti aging products also work great for acne. I know all these things with "acid" in them sound scary, but they're usually derived from fruit acids.

iloveblue agony auntI don't know if this is effective on everyone but for me, this is actually my one beauty secret. My friends sometimes notice how my pimples are gone overnight..well, it's because i just cover the pimple with toothpaste at night! Before I go to bed, i just wash my face, put a little moisturizer (except where my pimple is) and put toothpaste in my pimples. They are always effective and best of all, cheap!

As person12345 said, the toothpaste dries out that area. Yes that's what I have read too. Just try it out yourself, it could also work on you.

person12345 agony auntToothpaste dries out whatever it's put on, which shrinks pimples. It also works if you have a bug bite. You should only use it at night as it will look white and crusty.

Starlights agony auntOk i tried this technique a few times and it works!

ok so wash your face before bed time; add a small pea size amount of toothpaste on your pimple;

leave on for a few hours (like at least 3) or until it dries overnight;

then in the morning peel off; pimple should be gone; or much much lessened!
