A female age 51-59, anonymous writes:

This is a health question, but I'm hoping to get some opinion.

At the last few month , I'm having a very bad time, with numerous health complains, but when I go for tests, everything looks ok.

The doctor is running of ideas, what could be wrong , and concluded , it might be depression or anxiety.

I wouldn't be surprised, as I had many many bad things , happened to me, at the last 10 years. Yet most of my symptoms are physical and not emotional.

Like tired, lots of back pain, muscle pain, , crying spells, drizzly spells, etc. but it's so intense I can hardly function.

So I have still hard time that it's all just anxiety, and now my doctor prescribed very low dose of Xanax.

What helped me first, and I thought it was the best thing, but. Now it dose t seem to work anymore, it was 0.25 mg. as needed.

So my question is , do you have good or bad experience with Xanax, and what ways,

I was reading lots of forums, and people feels it's the best help for physical symptoms caused by depression and clinical anxiety.

Not asking advice, only personal experiences. Thanks for help.

Tisha-1 agony auntYou say your "thyroid test" was normal. In the singular. So I would suggest you ask that a full panel be run.

Fatigue, back pain, muscle pain, crying spells. You also said many bad things have happened.

Have you been evaluated for PTSD? Lyme disease?

You can run your symptoms through this http://symptoms.webmd.com/ but I would suggest you find a doctor who is willing to do a more thorough work up.

As for Xanax, I've just heard that the rebound anxiety can be worse than the symptom it was trying to treat. But that doesn't mean it isn't warranted in your situation.

Discuss this very thoroughly with your doctor and if you can't, find a better doctor. Good luck.

Hello Cindy,

I'm the OP . I'm thinking the same thing , what you do. That I have some mysterious issues , what they didn't find yet. I had many tests so far , and nothing justify they way I feel so far.

My thyroid test was normal also. What I hate about taking pills, like Xanax is that it's unpredictable how it will turn out on the long run, and I already feel , I need more cause the low dose not always helping.

As with every medication , it is very difficult to know what is your own symptom, and what is the sideffect.

But not taking anything is also very sad, cause than you have no help at all.

So yes, I'm not sure what to do, yet I feel that end of the rope feeling.

A female reader, CindyCares Italy +, writes (10 September 2015):

CindyCares agony aunt I took very briefly Xanax many years ago and I discontinued it ( under medical supervision ) very soon, because although it was very effective, it was effective in a weird way that did not suit me. At the time part of my problem was insomnia , and taking Xanax, I would fall into a death-like sleep , and wake up after 8 or 9 hours as when you wake up from anesthesia : with the sensation that no time has passed and that you just have closed your eyes for a sec ; but not refreshed at all, in fact dizzy and confused.

Apparently though benzodiasepines like Xanax have dufferent, personalized effects on each patient, so I guess it's a trial-and-error thing and a matter of finding the right drug in the right quantity.

Just throwing in a thought :

yes it is true that anziety can give you physical ailments, but the opposite is also true, that being plagued by a string of mysterious physical ailments will give you anziety and depression.

So, did you have yet a complete bloodwork for thyroid ?With levels of TSH,T3,T4 ?

I am saying this because back in April or May I started feeling very unwell and at first we could not figure out what it was , no test showed anything abnormal. I had terrible back aches, I almost could not walk because my legs felt like concrete, I was constantly fatigued, and felt always sad, irritable , and anxious . Eventually it turns out this :

I already suffer since several years of severe hypothiroidism due to a chronical autoimmune thyroiditis. I say " I suffer", but actually it is not true, - I did not suffer at all because my condition was fully under control, I just have to take a pill every morning and I have no symptoms at all.

Only, it appears that at a certain point ( " what a drag it is getting old ..." said wisely the Rolling Srones ) my

hormonal balanced changed remarkably and I needed to adjust the dosage of my pills , which I did and now I am fit as a fiddle .

A crazed thyroid may give just the symptoms you mention, so maybe checking that is a possibility.

A female reader, fishdish United States +, writes (10 September 2015):

fishdish agony auntMy sister had severe, debilitating nausea that my family couldn't figure out for months, and then a doctor determined it was anxiety, so yes anxiety can manifest itself physically..but it can also take the right doses. If I understand her particular situation, she has xanax type "as needed" but she takes another anti-anxiety on a daily. So maybe they just haven't found the right formula for you. Xanax for me is unpredictable. I've taken my .25 with no effect, and then sometimes dramatic effect, like nap for 4 hours effect, so I'm not surprised you haven't found it effective all the time..

Vit B12, my partner has just started his 3 month injections for this, we suspected this and had to really push for the correct blood testing to get the result, as general blood tests did not show. What a difference this had made to his health and exhaustion.

What about fibroneuralgia?

A female reader, Slippers  United Kingdom +, writes (9 September 2015):

Hi I'm a mental health nurse so here my penny's worth .. have you been checked for a b12 deficiency. . As b12 isn't always about anemia. . It lowers moods causes anxiety and sleeplessness and depression and even the way we feel and think .. ask if this test has been done .. and ask to see your range you could be borderline deficient.

So before taking an ssri. . However sometimes we do need something to help .. be honest with your doctor .. its very much a patient centred practice and you are the the paramount concern .. okay sweetie ..

Take care and we hear to listen to you anytime you need a ear .

A male reader, Garbo United States +, writes (9 September 2015):

Garbo agony auntI used to take Xanex on occasion at your low dose just to "relax" from the world and sleep through few days. I've stopped because it gives me a depressed overhang next few days: I feel down and not good. I have friends who are on it and like you they started low on dosage and now they are at 5 mg or more per day. Clearly it's addictive and you need ever more to sustain the feeling. Anyway, I stay away from that narcotic and haven't used it in 3 years.

In your case, given that the medical doctor has exhausted his options, I'd suggest you see a nutritionist and a homeopathic doctor for your fatigue.
