A female reader, CaroleP Australia +, writes (20 November 2008):

CaroleP agony auntAll these responses to your question are sensible and the bottom line is YES use a condom UNTIL you are totally committed for the 'long term' (by this time both of you will have been tested for STIs- one of the major reasons for using a condom as barrier to infection alongside any other 'non barrier' method of birth control)

I know a man who wears 3 condoms in addition to his wife using birth control- why? Because he has a genetic disprder which he does not wish to pass on to his children. You may be wondering why he has not chosen a vasectomy...well, personal choice is an issue to discuss with your partner and both person's views should be respected.

Here's some critical health info. you've probably never heard before. I came across this great little pamphlet and just had to pass it on immediately - it's by Miriam Grossman MD who shoots from the hip (or rather, the inside of her surgery after years of handing out tissues and consolation to young people who cry " Why didn't somebody tell me?"

Whether you are a college student or not, you'll find what Miriam says confronting but she dishes out some straight advice to prepare you for those challenges you are likely to face at school, or later, that can easily and quickly turn your world upside down.

In this pamphlet you will discover:

• which kind of cervix is more vulnerable to infection

• if the HPV (herpes virus) can be found under fingernails

• what could happen to your throat if you've had more than 5 oral sex partners

• what 'he' looks like to you when you wear 'beer goggles'

Yes always use a condom.

The contraceptive pill may not always work so my advice to you is to use the condom.

A female reader, Blue_Angel0316 United States +, writes (18 November 2008):

Blue_Angel0316 agony auntCondoms are used as an extra preventative measure. They help in protecting you from STDS such as infections, viral conditions and diseases like AIDS, Syphilis and Herpes. Only to mention a few. If you aren't sure that you are the only partner it could be a wise choice to continue use of the condoms. It will also help in case you have a mishap with the birth control pills. YES some people do concieve even when they are on the pill, even if they take it daily as perscribed. This isn't always the case though and the choice is up to you.

God Bless

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (18 November 2008):

As long as you have both been tested for STDs and you are taking the pill correctly every day then you should be fine.

Find out what brand of pill you are on and how long you have to take it for, before you are completely covered.

Good Luck!! xx

A female reader, anonymous, writes (18 November 2008):

The pill is highly effective when taken properly. The odds of getting pregnant are slim. However, there's nothing wrong with doubling up on birth control for added protection, especially if you are not ready for a child. Caution is always best.

A reader, anonymous, writes (18 November 2008):

You should ask your doctor or pharmacist how long it should take before you can dispense with the condoms. You can be sure you'll get the correct answer. You might like to think about having an Inter-Uterine Device fitted, or that thing they inject into your arm which lasts for yonks.

The pill is pretty much 100% effective, so the only other reason you would need him to wear a condom is to prevent infections. If you're clear and havent been sleeping around - either of you - you'll be safe on that score.

jstar92 agony auntYes they are, they aren't needed to stop pregnancy if you're on the pill but condoms stop STI's and the like.

Better safe than sorry

hey i know this is kind of crazy reading this from a 12yr old well i think you and you boyfriend should use a condom when having sex just for safety and to prevent s.t.d and other sicknesses like HIV it doesnt matter if you on birth controls or not but your life comes first cause hes just your boyfriend not your hubby who knows who has been having sex with him before you did/do. so your life comes first and if he doesnt want to have sex using a condom because its uncomfortable them tell him to forget about having sex cause your life comes first nomatter how much you want to do it but just think about it before you go and do it and at the end you regret. well i hope this helps you and remember think before you re-act. love Hope

I dont think so but you might want to wear one in case he has any STD's/STI's. If you dont wear a condom i would reccomend you both get checked out first
