I also used the online doctors, which also said I am severely depressed (quite accurate) I disagree with some other answers as i do believe medication helps, and as for "go out with friends, enjoy life ," this is the last thing your wanting to do if you could do this easily then depression would not be such a big issue.

I suggest you do see a doctor - as hard as this may be, I know I have been depressed for years and I still cannot make it to the doctors! it does ruin lives.

Good luck

nailglitter18 agony auntI had the same problems when I was your age, and I have friends who had problems when they were your age. *I* was lucky- I managed. But it was so hard. I wish I had gone to a psychologist or psychiatrist for help. My friends went through it alone, and they're STILL fighting it. Believe me, the hurt this can cause for you and your family and your friends isn't worth it. You have the power NOW to start getting a grip on this before it grips you completely. Before all you can think about is how depressed you are or how much you would love to get away to feel the high of that next cut... It's not good. It's self-destructive.

The earlier you start learning alternative coping methods, the better off the rest of your life will be. Talk to your mom, tell her you feel you should talk to a psychologist about your initial cutting, and the feelings that came with them. Tell her that it's really important to you, and stick to your guns.

Maybe even show her this question? It might be worth it.

Good luck- I know you'll pull through. ;)

TasteofIndia agony auntWell, first off - the world wide web is not a doctor, but it is a great utility for people to get ideas of what they have. What you know now is that something is WRONG and signs point to depression. The next step is to call up a doctor and set up an appointment to confirm your diagnosis. They can help you find resources (i.e. therapy, anti-depressants, websites, brochures, etc.) and help you find the next step.

Good luck, sweetness.

cd206 agony auntMy experience of these diagnose yourself websites is that you have a pretty good idea of what you think is wrong with you before you enter your first answer. This isn't me saying you want to be depressed but I wouldn't be surprised if you want someone to tell you that you are because you want some justification for how you feel, a reason why you feel bad if you will....

The other noter is right. If you think you are depressed the only thing to do is to speak to a real life doctor and see what they think. They are much better diagnosticians than online doctors in 10 cases out of 10

nailglitter18 agony auntif you feel that you have depression, you should try to make an appointment with a psychiatrist. I suppose you can do this through your GP- ask for a referral. There are medicines out there that can help by increasing the natural level of hormones in your brain to return your mood to normal.

Good luck!

A female reader, sxcbabiegal United Kingdom +, writes (29 January 2008):

sxcbabiegal agony auntFirst. Go to a real doctor do not listen to online tests they never are right. Second. if the doctor says that yes you do have depression. do not take anti-depressants . they only make you worse. i know this because one of my friends has had severe depression and they did not help her. now she is off of them. To fight depression, go out with friends, enjoy life , you will feel so much better after going to a few partys and few trips round the towns. I am recovering from depression myself. and i do feel alot better. please let me know how you feel after a while.

I'm sorry to hear your going through this! Depression can be a really hard thing to deal with. I'd suggest you talk to your parents (preferrably), or a school guidance counselor. Let them know you think you need to be in therapy for a little while. You'd be surprised how much talking to a professional can help. They don't judge you, and just talking about your feelings makes you feel so much better. Your next option would be to go to a psychologist and figure out if you need to be on anti-depressants. However, you should definitely start with therapy rather than prescription drugs... they don't always help, especially for people your age.

There are also a lot of helpful websites out there for if you need to talk to someone. www.befrienders.org is a great site that helps people with depression and suicide. You can even write to them anonymously at [email address blocked] I've used them a few times in my life, and I can't tell you how much it means to feel like theres someone there for you.

You should definitely try to talk to someone about how you're feeling. Depression can be controlled. You need to do something before it gets to be too much to handle.

Best of luck!!!
