A female age 30-35, anonymous writes:

my period is late. usually my cycle is about every 42 days. after taking the morning after pill twice, my period came faster and i had it within 28 days. it's been more than 7 weeks now since i have had my period. my boyfriend and i had sex about a month ago, but we had used a condom. im unable to get the pill because i am underage and my parents have refused to allow me. i have been quite stressed from school recently but i am wondering how high my chances are of pregnancy. i have not been experiencing symptoms so far and i was wondering if now would be an appropriate time to get a pregnancy test or would my results be inaccurate IF my period is actually coming? please help.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (27 April 2009):

Sorry, to be more specific, i meant that i had taken the morning after pill twice before on different occasions when my boyfriend had not used a condom and the doctor had told me it might disrupt my usual cycle. i thought this might contribute to my late period.

the last time we did it, which is the occasion im worried about he had a condom, but my period is still late.

thanks very much for your help :)

k_c100 agony auntA pregnancy test does not normally detect pregnancy until you have missed your period therefore I doubt you would get very accurate results.

About being underage - I'm not sure where you live however I know that in most places you have to be 16 to have sex but can still get the pill from a doctor no matter how old you are. Doctors have to abide by patient-doctor confidentiality rules where they are not allowed to disclose any of their patients medical files - so even if you are having sex underage they cannot tell anyone (not even your parents).

Even if your parents say you cannot have the pill - I think you need to ignore them and go to your doctors alone. Your parents will be more horrified if you were pregnant than if you take the pill - they are being irresponsible to deny you from taking the pill. You are being sensible by wanting to take precautions - they are just being irrational.

If your cycle is normally 42 days (that in itself is unusual - that is a very long cycle!) then seen as your cycle was cut short last time I think it is likely you will have your next period within the next week or two so try not to worry.

I'm not sure why you took the morning after pill twice? This is a silly idea - you only need to take one within 72 hours of having unprotected sex. And why did you take the morning after pill when you used a condom? Did it break? If it was still in tact and there was no other contact with your boyfriends sperm then it is highly unlikely you are pregnant - it seems that you just had a shorter cycle so your next period will take a bit longer to arrive. Relax and try not to worry about it!

I suggest you go to see your doctor if you are planning to continue having sex with your boyfriend - you dont even need to have the pill. You could get the birth control injection from your doctor (they are normally one injection every 3 months administered by your doctor) - this way you wouldnt even have to tell your parents, they would never know that you were taking anything!

Make an appointment at the doctor, explain that you are having regular sex with your boyfriend and you would like to discuss birth control options. They will give you a number of options and you can discuss what will be best for you. And while you are there, of your period has still not arrived then tell your doctor and they will be able to help with that too.

I hope this helps and good luck!
