Would a guy say they're single if they're not?

Hi this guy has a crush on me and has shown it for almost 3 months then he call me and I never answer him he left the following day, in early September I saw him again and we said hi, he still notice me he said "hey" and again i never answer him,even if I also give him signs that I care, but all this on my part is because I am so shy and that is because I like him also,I saw him the night before where he know that he will see me, he was with a girl they look a little alike, may be a family I don't know, now I don't want to loose him again so I get the courage to ask him if is single and he said no he is not after giving me all the attention in the world. I still care about him, now my question is would a guy say they are single if the not?
