A female Canada age 51-59, *ondering why writes:

Every October our whole family gets together for a week long vacation with my parents anniversary, my brothers and sister and all their families attend. This year my 21 yr old niece Lyndsay brought her new boyfriend, Jace (he is 24). He seemed like a nice guy, very shy and a little timid but I figured he was meeting his gfs WHOLE family at once .

One morning at breakfast Lyndsay slipped an icecube down his shirt as a joke, he started chasing her around trying to get her back in a playful manner. She went to run up the stairs to get away and he grabbed her (again all in a playful manner) she slipped on the stairs and hit her head. We all knew it was an accident but his behaviour baffled me, he got very upset, put his hands in the air and said " I didn't mean it I swear" he looked like he was going to cry and was tense the rest of the morning. When she tried to give him a hug a few minutes later he pushed her away and refused to touch her. Why would he act this way?

Nime agony auntPoor guy, he was probably mortified and, as the only non-family member, thought you'd all be saying and thinking horrible things about him for being too physically rough with your niece. As for pushing Lyndsay away, I'd say it was because he was a bit miffed with her for putting him in this situation in the first place. Hope you weren't hard on him!

TasteofIndia agony auntHe was probably completely embarrassed, and then embarrassed that he was upset and needed comforting. If he is horribly shy and something bad happened while he was in a high pressure situation (meeting the whole family for a shy person is the ultimate high pressure situation), he probably shut down in his brain and couldn't move on. He probably felt/feels horrible about what happened, and that was the only way he could express himself.

Shy people can be peculiar. Good luck, sweet!
