That might be the case.
But lets not discount that humans are often not all that nice.
He dumped you, it wouldn't look good for him if you were the one to then move on first would it? It is one thing to no longer want to play with a toy, something else to then see someone else pick up that toy.
It has been a couple of months, a bit to long to realize he has made a mistake (as in giving up the woman he loves) but the right time to realize he gave up a girl that was (presuming here) giving it when no replacement has so far been found.
Never underestimate the sleaziness of guys. If we can fuck women we despise, then we can certainly probe an old gf to see if we can still get some action out of her.
Of course, he could still love you and realized it finally... but I am male, I know how my own mind works.
