 Actually, scientists areguessing that a man has frequent erections during sleep and in the morning before sleep because the penis needs oxygen-rich blood occasionally in order to keep the tissue healthy.
It's just a natural occurrence and completely unconscious (like breathing and heartbeat) that the body takes care of to make sure the guy's penis stays in full working condition.

 All I know is that, as an approximately 60-year-old man, I have frequently awakened with erections all my life since about seven or eight years old. Some I know are associated with erotic dreams, and I think that some are apparently related to a need to urinate. Mine does the same hun, read somewhere that it's due to his bladder being full. Men go hard and soft throughout the night due to sleep patterns etc. But usually waking up with one is due to needing the loo! xx
