Ever since I can remember, I've had knee problems. I only found out a year and a half ago that I am flat footed also. I did some research and found out that my knee problems may have stemmed from my flat footedness. However, what I am really wondering is, why am I so heavy on my feet when I walk? I try incredibly hard to be quiet, but all my friends tell me that I'm really loud, including past high school coaches. I played at least 3 sports from grade 6-12, and had to go to physiotherapy because my knees hurt so much. I also grew up in Hong Kong walking on marble floors, and have moved to Canada for university. I am wondering if the fact that marble floors being a lot thicker- me not thinking about being loud, and then coming to Canada where people hear every step you take because the wooden floors are so thin and hollow, have anything to do with why I am so loud.

Because youre not walking on the front part of your foot you let both parts come down at the same time so it's really heavy

Sageoldguy1465 agony auntWhen I was a kid (at about age 13) my flat feet were noted and corrected... Prior to that, I had pains throughout my skeleton when I walked great distances (My step-Mother suspected the problem when I told her that my thighs hurt when I caddied just 9 holes for her!)....

Following correction, many little "aches and pains" disappeared, and I took to much more physical activity. These days - even in my advancing years - I enjoy an active life with tennis, bowling, golf and dancing....

I suggest two things:

1. Have your feet examined and see if you can get appliances that will correct (or, accomodate) your flat-footedness, and,

2. Search and find physical activities which are "exercises" which might cater to "lightfootedness." I recommend something like ballroom dancing lessons... (It doesn't hurt that you get to interact with lots of nice ladies whilest doing this!!!)....

Good luck.....

This is what a specialist explained on TV:

There are people who walk on their heels, and there are people who walk on their toes.

Those who walk on their heels are louder. And they hurt their knees too. Because with every step, they hit the heel to the floor like a hammer. The force of the hammer is equal to your weight! Naturally the force is transferred to upper parts, including the knee joint. So if you walk 1000 steps a day, your knee joint is hammered 1000 times a day! Multiply that to your age!

It's healthier to walk on toes. That part of the foot acts like a spring. It absorbs the force and doesn't transfer it to your knee.

And this is my personal experience:

Sometimes people think they have a problem in their knee join, but the problem is not the joint. It's the knee muscles. If the muscles around the knee can not provide enough support, there will be pain and difficulty in walking. Try to strengthen your muscles. It worked for me and many people who took the advice from me.

So_Very_Confused agony auntI am flat footed. I was born that way... I can't imagine how you didn't know before hand to be honest... unless you have what i have which is a flexible flat foot... which means it LOOKS like there is an arch when you are not standing... but i digress

I walk heavy too... and i have bad knees but I have never been told that either are related to being flat footed.

It's probable that you walk heavy now since you are used to heavier floors... I know that's part of it for me.

I find that when I am bare foot or wearing very very flat shoes I walk heavier... heels make me walk lighter and more on my toes than my heels...
