 He probably masturbated earlier in the day and that took some wind out of his sails. You might think that would just make him last longer, but it's not quite the same. As somebody else stated, going for a sub optimal (but still good) position can drag things out a bit. So you may want to ask him what positions are "highly effective" and which ones are less so.
