What should I say to the doctor about my depression?

A male United Kingdom age 30-35, *kelligon writes:

Tommorow I am going to the doctors to try and get medication for my depression. The reason I need these meds is because I'm losing all motivation to do anything, I mean, I've almost quit my job, and I've almost started smoking again! And I'm close to self-harming.

My question is this:

What do I say to the doctor? I mean, I can't just say "I'm depressed and I need medication," can I?

Blue_Angel0316 agony auntSo true bibsy! Sometimes it can happen that way. The young lady here must keep her options open and follow thru with her treatment, however her input will be an ongoing part of her treatment. By learning how to speak up and express her problems, feelings, side effet from the medication, etc she can help the doctor give her the best diagnosis. By follow simple guidlies she will be able to help him give her the best possible treatment also.

Different medciations react differently with each person because of their body weight, age, type and severity of their conditions. There are other factors that can aggravate the conditions. Things like not getting enough sleep, not eating healthy foods, lack of vitamins in the body along with other conditions such as other disorders, diseases can make depression worsen. Drugs and alcohol, even use of tobacco can increse complications of the condition. Depression itself has many forms, sometimes drug therapy or pshycotherapy isn't enough alone.

There is no real wonder drug and that is why it's very important to chart any side affects, such as increased mood swings, irritability, loss of appetite or sleep. Other things like short or long term memory loss are important also. Take all medications as directed and NEVER stop them without a Doctor's approval this could be very serious even life threatening.

I hope this all helps the young lady to get better.

Thanks for reading and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

katatonik agony auntYes, you can. Whether (s)he puts you on medication or not will be up to his/her discretion, though. As Blue_Angel said, be completely honest with your doc (yes, including your thoughts of self harm) so that you can get the most accurate and most complete diagnosis. If you report only part of the problems you run the risk of having only a partial solution suggested to you. Good luck =)

Blue_Angel0316 agony auntTell him exactally how you feel. He will ask you questions I am sure. It helps him in his diagnosis. Don't hold back on anything. If you fee suidicidal tell him that too. This can all have an impact on the type of medication he will prescribe for your therapy. It's possible that he will want to let you talk to a therapist also or perhaps a pshyciatrist. Don't feel embarrassed. Depression is a widely spread disease and you can't help it if you develope it.

The affects of depression can worsen without proper treatment. If the Doc isn't well informed he may misdiagnose you and you won't have the proper treatment for your particular depression. Depression is more than just a sad mood or a feeling of boredom. It can get worse with age, situations, heriditary factors and prolonged illness without proper treatment or when left untreated. It has to do with a short circuit in the brain and chemcial imbalances.

Getting proper rest and eating a proper diet can help in warding off the depression and it's symptoms. When you are recieving the necessary medications and other treatment you should be able to get better. Having a support system, like a good friend, or family member is a great help too. Read up on depression because the more you know about the condition the more equipped you are to handle your problems.

I have suffered with depression all of my life. I went thru many years of needless suffering. I didn't know how or where to get help. When I was married my husband was ashamed for me to get help and after he left and I divorced him for abandoment I found out I was Bi-Polar. I got help and started learning everything I could about my condition. It was a long hard struggle and I still battle it everyday. I do ok though and I won't give up. I don't want you to either! By the POWER and GRACE OF GOD I made it thru. I am going to be 52 soon and I want you to live that long and longer. You can do it hon.

Get to that Doc and tell him EVERYTHING! Let him ask his questions and be HONEST and OPEN. It will do you the most good to always be a part of your wellness plan. I unfortunantly have many health problems, the US gov calls it AFFECTIVE DISORDERS, but I am going to keep on going.

I always say I am TORE up FROM THE FLOOR UP!

TRUTH IS~~~~~~~~

I AM STILL ALIVE AND KICKING,

I JUST AIN'T KICKING AS HIGH AS I USED TO! 8-)

Share your experiences with others, talking about your problems sometimes gives you a blessing. You often find out that others have worse problems than you.

I PRAY that you can conquer the demons that seek your soul and treasure your life enough to NEVER consider taking your own life or hurting yourself in any way.

I CARE! GOD CARES!

PEACE TO YOU IN THE NEW YEAR!

God bless,
