i have a very big problem with acne. i am 17 coming up to 18. when you look at me straight on my face is fine just the odd spot on my forehead. but on each side you just see spots. when im at home in the bathroom mirror they look fine but when i see myself in the mirror at college they stand out so much.

it really digs with my confidence sometimes and i hate it.

i have tried so many different treatments. i have tried clearasil, garnier, supermarket own brand and none of them have worked at the moment i just wash my face with soap and then use a simple face wipe, but there has been no difference.

please help

which treatments have really worked? and which of them have worked fast?

I had horrible problems with that for several years, and the solution came from a psychologist who was working together with the dermatologist: apparently I had some kind of tic, or I was so worried about my skin problem that I was touching my face all the time and spreading the infection, and that I should make an effort to stop touching my face. Together with that, antibiotic cream, one clay mask once a week (I use lancome or clinique, but I am sure there must be some more "manly" ones for guys with skin problems), daily cleaning like the above mentioned clinique 3, no soap because it dries the skin that becomes even more oily by reaction, and voilà! good luck

If nothing of the normal facial washes work, you can either go to you pharmacist where you can get "pharmacy only" creams for acne, you can buy them without prescription but are only available at a pharmacy.

The GP can prescribe you antibiotic creams which you apply to the affected areas, these normally take a bit of time to work and require patience and following the treatment regimen. you can also have the next step up which is antibiotics such as tetracyclines, normally you are required to take them everyday and they can take a while to work.

Being a person who had suffered from the age of 10 to the age of 21 it was all over my face, neck, back, chest and they made my life a complete misery. I ended up having to see a consultant dermatologist to go on a drug called roaacutane which can only be given when nothing else works.

hope this helps

I used something called Quinoderm.

Also, if you are finding it bad, you can go to the doctor's and if they also think it's bad, they will give you anti-biotics.

I tried Clinique, Neutrogena and Proactiv, none of which worked. So I went to see my doctor and she prescribed Adapalene cream (Differin or Fougera) in addition to Duac topical gel. You apply to your face every night and wash it off the next morning with soap. It's not that expensive with insurance and it worked in about three months.

chigirl agony auntI use Clinique 3-step actually. It's less expensive to pay for the dermatologist and isotretinoin if you think in the long term perspective. Plus, Clinique didn't help my acne at all. It just kept the spots in check.

In addition I have very dry skin and need to use the expensive moisturizers for my face. But any really thick and full moisturizer works for helping it not get worse. The only thing that's helped me so far is the Isotretinoin. Im currently 2 months into the treatment that can take up to 4 months or so. The acne is not completely gone yet, and Im experiencing extremely dry skin, but it's definitely looking better! I've got friends who suffered bad from acne and who are now completely free of it years after they ended the treatment (maybe one or two spots every now and then which is nothing).

I've also tried many other high and fashionable products that are expensive. Such as Biotherm, Clarins, Estee Lauder, Lancome, etc. Same effect (or lack thereof) as with Clinique.

I use a really gentle wash from Avene, called Eau Thermal, its green and you can get it at boots, its really gentle and designed for sensitive but oily skin. Then I use Zineryt, which is a lotion that the doctor can presctibe you if you ask for it with antibiotics and zinc in it. Then I use and Avene moisture called Clenance, which is mattifying and oil absorbing and really gently and stops the Zineryt drying out my skin. I went from having basically nasty acne and i was worrying about scarring, to having 100% perfect skin, I havent had a spot in about 3 months! :D

I know this might sound like a girlie regime, but my 18 year old brother does it, because he was bummed about his skin too, and his is now perfect too, he just says use the zineryt in the evening if you shave in the morning, because it burns if youve just shaved!

Hope this helps! :D

chigirl agony auntYou need to see a dermatologist for the acne. Some light spots every now and then can be held in check by store brands and cleansers. Black holes can be held in check that way too. But the skin deep acne lays deeper, and regular cleansing will have no effect. The only thing that helps is to see a dermatologist, or wait until you grow out of it. Although the more heavily hit cases of acne last a life time. In addition you risk scarring. Seeing a dermatologist about this is the by far better choice, and not as difficult as it may sound. You just find one and call directly, or ask your doctor on who to go see.

I went to a dermatologist, and although treatment is a bit expensive (you can ask before hand how much it will cost) and have side effects, treatment can last a life time. I got pills of Isotretinoin prescribed to me. You should look it up and read about it. It's a pill you eat. The side effects can be really bad, and so you must use caution. However you can talk about other types of treatment with the dermatologist too.

It's far better to pay for treatment that actually works, than using money on products that don't. I use facial cleaners as well too keep the lighter spots in check, but the deep acne is not affected by skin-products like that.
