A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Ok. I'm 17 and sexually active with a long term bf. I used to be on the pill but kept on forgetting to take it and messing it up so i decided i should come of it, wait for my next period to come along so my system could sort itself out and then maby have the implant or somthing. However my next period has never come. I can't think for sure when i last had a period but it was over two months i think. i have taken a good quality pregnacy test that said i wasnt pregnant. i have lost about a stone recently and havnt been eating very healthily so i guess it could be that. i havnt been stupid iv just gone from being a bit tubby to not tubby. i have also been experiencing more discharge than i used to. i read that more discharge is a sign of pregnacy which really freaked me out and that was when i went to get the pregnancy test.

I know i need to go to the doctor but i just wondered if anyone had any thoughts or suggestions.

I will also take another pregnancy test soon.

Thanks for reading this :) x

my period was very irregular before going on the pill which was why i went on the pill in the first place. also, we are always safe and have never had unprotected sex. we always check the condom after and it has never split.

Illithid agony auntWhat pill were you taking? My ex used to be on OTC (Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo) and didn't use it correctly (missing pills) and quit abruptly. It took her several months to even out again, having extremely irregular periods both in duration and frequency. Those things really do a number on your hormone balance even when used properly. If you've been missing pills, then going back on the pills, then missing pills, then going back on again, then quit all of a sudden... it will take a while to get balanced again. It wouldn't hurt to see a doctor, and certainly pregnancy tests are a good idea since you can't rely on the pill to prevent pregnancy if you even miss ONE pill, but it's not unusual to be screwed up now that you've gone off the pill.

celtic_tiger agony auntOk, first of all, get yourself to the doctor asap! You may well be pregnant.

Now, it often takes your body a while to adjust to not being on the pill. The bleeding you experience when on the pill is not an actual "period" - it is not the same as you get when you have a monthly cycley. It is purely a "withdrawal bleed" simply a response to not taking the hormones.

When you take the pill, you are essentially fooling your body into thinking its pregnant - so no period. Then when you stop, your body thinks, oh no baby, so the womb lining is ejected. hence the bleed.

You can get pills where there is no monthly bleed.

Because the hormones disrupt the system it can take a long time, 3 months + to let your body re adjust to the natural order of things.

What you are experiencing may just be withdrawal symptoms.... but please get checked out. The pill is not 100% effective and often pregnancies can happen.

Good luck!

Sookie agony auntOk well the question I have is have u had unprotected sex since u have stopped taking the pill? I got pregnant with my son a few weeks after my husband and I decided we wanted to start trying, my last period was in april and I took test after test all saying "not pregnant" then in june so 2 mts later I got one of the real expensive ones and it still said "not pregnant" but 3 days after that I was talking to my mother-in-law and she decided to go get me one more and sure enough I was pregnant it really depends on the amount of hormones in your body also did u get ur period every month before this?
