 Think about something that he is really interested in and get him a gift that shows that you pay attention and put thought into the gift. Example, if he likes a certain music group, get him one of their cd's, or if he likes sports, get him a hat of his favorite team. Then he will know that you pay attention to what he likes.
Also, when you give it to him say something like, "I saw this and I thought of you" and give him a cute smile!
