I remember being a Middle School girl. I always had my girls around for moral support and whatnot. As you said, she's shy, so having her friends around probably makes her a little less reserved.
I say, make some 1 on 1 time. She's shy, so you should go ahead and take the reigns. Ask her if she'd like to go out to eat or to the movies, or even just for a walk in the park. Even just holding hands in private can be really intimate and special.

 It can be pretty annoying. Boys can be the same way sometimes. If it's possible ask them for a little privacy as polite as you can. You don't want to offend them or your girlfriend.If that doesn't work, wait until you and your girlfriend are on your own and tell her how you feel as polite as you can.

reader, anonymous, writes (1 March 2008): This is pretty natural when you're quite young - girls generally stick with their girls, because they're not at the stage of wanting a full-on boyfriend. Maybe you could suggest going out some time to the movies? This way you get to be together, and it gives you a nice opportunity to be closer. But make sure that you dont press too much on her at once, take things at her pace and she'll learn to be more comfortable around you. Good luck :]
