Thick, pasty discharge and swollen vagina - I'm doing a pap smear, should I be worried?

A female Ireland age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I don't know what's wrong with my genitals!

I have an extremely thick, pasty discharge, also my vagina is incredibly swollen!

I have had swabs done many times, everytimes they come back clear except for BV and thursh and everytime I get treated for them, but it doesn't go away! The doctors just aren't making any progress.

I only have one sexual partner who I know is clean.

I don't understand why this won't go away. It is ruining my sex life and my confidence.

I am now so swollen that my boyfriend finds it hard to get inside me.

The doctor is now showing a bit of concern and is sending me for a smear test next week!

Should I be worried?

Thanks!

A female reader, Blue_Angel0316 United States +, writes (9 December 2008):

Blue_Angel0316 agony auntBV is Baterial Vaginitis. An inflammation that occurs in the vagina. It is caused by different strains of germs that can promote yeast infections and trichomoniasis. E-coli is sometimes the culprit. If left untreated it can lead to (PED) Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. High blood sugar can cause the condition of yeast to be higher in the body of a diabetic but high content of sugar in the blood can cause the same in someone who is not diabetic as well. All of this happens when overgrowth of the bacteria prevents the normal balance of the microrganisms and PH Balance to be maintained. Lactobaccilli can be taken by mouth also and it a major natural bacteria disinfectant and Gardnerella organisms. Lactobaccilli is also found in the body as well.

Causing factors can include poor hygeine, IUD's,hot weather, tight clothing, dark undergarments, and routine vaginal cleansing. Use of powders and taking tub baths especially ones with bubble or soaking qualities can also promote BV.

It can worsen in those women during menopause, also with women with diabetes, and those with lowered immune resistance due to other health conditions.

* Juat a note:You can also ingest the yogurt as it helps to fight the production of the yeast in the body if you are on strong antibiotics or if you have reoccuring yeast infections. Yougurt contains natural properties that help to fight the bad yeast in the body.

I hope this helps.

God Bless,

Pay extra attention to the washing of your underwear. Change washing powder if need be, use a washing powder that is recommended for baby clothes and wash your under wear by hand. Very important, rinse it a few times (every time in clean water). I know this might sound stupid but it might help to avoid irritation and to avoid this from happening repeatedly.

A reader, anonymous, writes (9 December 2008):

It's the thrush I think... Natural Yoghurt is the best treatment. It's cool and will feel good inside your vagina, and treat the infection immediately. Your boyfriend needs to be treated to. Although he won't show symptoms, he is passing the infection back to you every time it gets cleared up. Yoghurt is no good for him, so he must go to the doctor too and get some anti-biotics to take. Petina is right about wearing natural materials next to your skin, and if you feel sore when you wash, then use baby oil around your vagina, it's more gentle on your skin than water is, don't worry it will keep you clean. Check your diet as well, I think that dairy products like cheese and milk should be eliminated. Having thrush stinks, it's embarrassing and it hurts like hell, but it is very easily treated. Don't worry, even babies get it, so you haven't done anything wrong. Get your boyfriend treated, use the yogurt and check back with the doctor to make sure it's gone.

PS: I don't know what BV is, could you explain that expression to me.

A female reader, Blue_Angel0316 United States +, writes (9 December 2008):

Blue_Angel0316 agony auntI suggest that you consult your doctor immediately. It certainly isn't normal and is a great cause for concern. Female problems of this nature can be caused from different things. You can notice the color, consistantcy and odor, along with increased or diminished amount of discharge. This helps in concluding basicly what type of condition you may have.

If you have seen the same Doctor's with no real results, get a second opinion. You could have a serious problem if you have been treated many times and nothing has worked. Your partner may need to be treated as well. It's possible that he has contracted the same condition and keeps passing it back to you! While your body isn't fighting off the symptoms and problems from this condition, his may be able to. The condition left untreated in your sexual partner could be harboring in his body and thru transferred back to you.

Your symptoms have a wide rage of conditions that could be possible. Baterial or yeast infections would be a first thought since you are with someone you feel is faithful and has no known diseases. Sexually transmitted diseases would be a concern if either of you have had sex with any other partner before the relationship. Diseases such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, syphilus, and many others can cause severe problems..There are also other things to consider such as vaginal or cervical cancer and Diabetes. If you can rule out a forgotten foreign body within there will be no concern of this. Changes in color, consistancy and odor can tip you off to a possible infection.

Some of the conditions above if left untreated can lead to sterility, cancer, blindness or even death. Again I will advise you to CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY.

Hi!

Thanks for the reply.

I always wear cotton pants and never wash with soap down there.

I'm very aware of most of these things as I have suffered from this for a few years now.

I haven't tried yogurt.... I'll give it a try.

Thanks a lot.

A female reader, petina1 United Kingdom +, writes (9 December 2008):

petina1 agony auntCould be your underwear, cotton is best, not nylon. Don't use soap to wash down there with and dont use bath salts, bubble bath etc. Radox is worst. If you can stand smearing 'live yoghurt' on yourself that is the best thing to treat thrush. After sex always urinate and wash your self with warm water, no soap. Just a few hints as I used to suffer with thrush and tried all these things and am okay now. Still do the checks with your doc though won't you in case it is something underlying. hope this helps.
