A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hi over the past year I have had days where I haven't eaten purely because I can't be bothered. I'm not anorexic or anything like that, I'm extremely happy with my body, but sometimes just the thought of cooking food just makes me feel like its the biggest task and a just don't want to do it.

I've never eaten what you might call conventional lunches( sandwiches, soups etc) mainly because I dislike bread. I often wish I could just throw a sandwich together and eat it but I can't. So I always end up cooking something that most people would eat for dinner. Sometimes however I just won't cook at all even when I know exactly what I want to eat I won't cook it because I can't be bothered to go through all the hassle of cooking pasta frying garlic etc then washing up the pan, seive, bowl, knife, chopping board. then the next day I might go all out a cook a complex lunch and not think twice about it. The only way I will cook something when I don't want to is if someone else is having lunch with me then it feels like its worth the effort.

Anyone got any ideas about this? Or has a similar problem?

chigirl agony auntIt could be related to depression, if you already have a depression I would say it is because of it. But not being interested in cookin, that in itself is no sign of depression.

Thank you for all of your help it's nice to see I'm not the only one who has this problem. My main concern was that it was depression related as most of my family have suffered from it including my mom and siblings, and I myself suffer from anxiety which was a recent discovery. I think I will try to freeze more items as this would help. Thanks again for all your help

eek agony aunti have had a very similar problem. When my ex cheated then left, i found i could not be bothered to do a lot of everyday things. I stopped cooking for myself as i did not see the point of cooking only for me (i used to take great care in the meals i cooked each evening), and am only recently now starting to get my act back together. Dont panic its just a phase you are going through. If you want to chat more or would like some easy recipe's pm me im always happy to talk.

mizz.butterflies agony aunti just finished cleaning my kitchen. it took me about an hour. i feel you on this . whenever i cook,i use tons of pans, plates etc.i like to be creative in the kitchen but not everyday....what can u do about this? Well....i always have salads, another simple meal is fishsticks...u just bake them in the oven and pour some lemon on them....or add lettuce. another simple meal is fried chicken. cindycares is right about freezing food. another alternative is to look for a restaurant/company that delivers meals to ur house everyday.it will cost u about 100 dollars which is what u usually spend for groceries.

chigirl agony auntEver heard of instant noodles? Or soup in a can? Or fruit salads? Making lunch doesn't always have to be about cooking you know.

I understand your issue as I'm not a big bread fan either. But I eat cereal with youghurt instead, or cook a bowl of oat meal (not the premade stuff, I use plain oats and it's reallycheap and tasty). Or I can have fruits and youghurt. Or instant soups where you just add water and whatever else you want in addition. Or instant noodles where you also just add water.

If I don't feel like spending a lot of time cooking I buy something pre-made, or something that is easy to fix. Or I cook a huge pile once I cook and then freeze the leftovers, or just have leftovers for dinner the other day. So maybe you should just start to cook bigger portions rather than one simple meal each time. Cook for 3 meals and save the other two for the following days.

It's not difficult. You learn as you go along. At 18 I didn't know nearly anything about cooking or how to do it fast and easy without creating a lot of dirty dishes. Just remember that the more you do it the faster you get, and the less bother it becomes. Something that could take me an hour to make at 18 now takes me 20 minutes.

So_Very_Confused agony auntI always cook enough for leftovers and freeze in single serving containers so there's always something to grab for lunch or a quick dinner.

and why make something so difficult?

I make crockpot (slow cooker meals) or all in one pan meals.... extra fluid will cook the rice or pasta in the pan with the meat and veggies... keep minced garlic in the jar in the fridge.

or better yet... eat breakfast food at dinner... scramble an egg or something...

a big pot of hearty soup or stew lasts me weeks on end...

A female reader, CindyCares Italy +, writes (24 January 2012):

CindyCares agony aunt But why do you have to skip meals altogether when you can't be bothered with cooking ? Eat big salads adding any leftovers. Eat raw vegs and fruit . Eat cheese and yoghurts. Eat canned tuna, ham, smoked salmon. Eat boiled potatoes and boiled eggs ( that's not really cooking right ? ) Buy yourself a roasted chicken at the deli counter !

Even better, give yourself a push and force yourself to cook, but just once every ,say, 10 days. Cook up a storm, different dishes , divide in portions, freeze then defrost as needed .
