Fatherly Advice agony auntBeing vegetarian can lead to iron deficiency. There are non meat sources of iron. My wife eats a lot of spinach at that time. I think other leafy greens are high in iron too. Your Doctor can easily test for low iron.

Tarawr agony auntI suffer from this about %70 of the time. It usually only lasts the first two days, and then for the remainder, it's gone. What I do is take a few aspirin, Tylenol or any type of pain killer and rest.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (19 February 2010):

No you are normal, this happens to many women. Talk to your doctor and she can prescribe you some medication to ease the pain. Birth control pills are commonly used to ease the menstruation pains for example, but there are other drugs too if normal pain killers dont help you.

A female reader, bluelagoon United Kingdom +, writes (19 February 2010):

do you feel faint or weak? if so you may be anemic. due to the loss of blood you will have an iron deficiancy and this can lead to the type of symptoms you have stated. i suggest going to your doctor as i could be completely wrong and if it is anemia then you can be subscribed iron tablets to help. In the mean time try eating foods with high iron e.g red meat, eggs, baked beans etc. My cousin had something very similar to you and she was helped through going to the doctor so thats probably the best solution in this case! hope you get better soon!

Caring Stranger agony aunthi

i have exactly the same problems and have done for many years. i throw up, faint, im in extreme pain, i cant eat etc. it got to the point where i was literally bed ridden for 4 days every month during my periods which just is not practical in life and nobody should suffer that way. i went to the doctor which is what i would suggest you do too. what they have done with me is put me on the contraceptive pill in order to try and reduce the pain and heaviness of the periods which in turn helps with the sickness feeling etc. its all related to the hormones and a contraceptive pill may help. but i would suggest you go to the doctors and discuss ways with them to reduce these symptoms.

good luck, i know how it feels and hope you can get better soon xxx

A reader, anonymous, writes (19 February 2010):

You have my sympathy. I get sore swollen breasts, bloating, constipation, increased appetite swinging between craving salty foods to sweet foods. I fall asleep on the train to work and at my desk and also my legs feel like lead! BTW I get these symptoms for a whole 2 WEEKS before my period.

You could go to your GP or try Evening Primrose oil or vitamin B12, although a recent medical study found that these had little effect on PMS/PMT symptoms. I just put up with it!
