A female Canada age 22-25, anonymous writes:

I have a poll question of sorts...

What is the YOUNGEST age you think two people should get engaged? (ie. 19, 20, 25 etc)

And how long do you think you should have been with your significant other before you get engaged? (ie. 1 year, 2 years, etc)

And what is the LONGEST you think an engagement should last before actually getting married? (ie. 6 months, 2 years, etc)

I'm just curious to see what you all think about this, see if there is a general consensus!

Also if you have a personal story about your engagement, how old you were, how long you were together, if the marriage lasted, and if not, how long before you got divorced, etc, etc.

Thank you!

I've just got engaged after being with my fiance for 8 months, although we decided that we would get married about 2 months into the relationship, if that. I'm 28, he's 25.

I actually thought engagements were a thing of the past!

Still, my advice: As long an engagement as possible - it makes for a shorter marriage!

Fairy_Lu agony auntI dont think it really matters as long as two people are in love and have seriously thought it through then they should do what feels right. My brother was with his fiancee a year before they got married they she is 25 and he will be 24 when they married may this year and have only been together 5 months.

I think the time between being engaged and being married usually depends on if you can afford the wedding.

Ginalolabridga agony auntWell i was engaged at 21 married at 23 and we will celebrate our 30th wedding Anniversary this year.

I think two years being engaged is usually the norm and round about 26-28 nowadays getting engaged at this age means at 28-30 you can think about getting married having said that there is a lot of couples waiting till their early 30s to tie the knot now i think it is up to the individual and how long you want to wait to be together weddings are expensive now and a lot of couples are opting for the registry marriage instead of the big white wedding!

A male reader, 2old4this + , writes (14 January 2009):

2old4this agony auntYoungest= 24-25 women, 28-30 for men

longest dating before engagement= Again, age is a factor, but I say if you are both over 25 then a minimum of a year

because by then both of you have given up on trying to be mr or mrs perfect and the true yous have long since come out. If you are still together and want to be, then go for it.
