A reader, anonymous, writes (6 December 2008):

These are some smells I hope some company would make as a perfume

1.The smell of the earth just before it begins to rain

2.The smell of the sea.

3.The smell of sunshine in a garden of flowers.

4.The smell of pomegranate tree, guava tree and jasmine all rolled into one.

Does any one know of a perfume that has both a fruity and floral smell in it?

A female reader, SirenaBlusera Mexico +, writes (6 December 2008):

SirenaBlusera agony auntI remember in one of my psychology classes I took, the teacher was talking about how humans communicate through scent. She said that your taste in perfumes is a clue as to your compatibility as a couple. For example, if you love a particular fragrance but your partner finds it to be a real turnoff, according to my teacher, it's a sign that there's no "chemistry."

Of course, she could be wrong.

I would like to hear various opinions.

I also remember reading that the sense of smell is the strongest sense connected with our memories. We remember smells more than sights, sounds, etc.

I realize how ridiculous this sounds, but I like the smell of horse manure. I don't know why, but it comforts me. I think that it's because I love horses and used to ride when I was younger and the smell of horse poop makes me feel nostalgic. Don't laugh. :)

SirenaBlusera agony auntChanel No. 5... yay Daniel!! :)

I like Chanel because it smells awesome, but best of all, they DON'T use animal testing.

I won't buy it if they hurt some critter for it.

You have to remember, everyone's chemistry is different. A perfume is gonna smell differently on you than it does on the little card. I found this out because I used to work in a Belk store in the fragrance department when I was in college.

A male reader, Danielepew Mexico +, writes (6 December 2008):

Danielepew agony auntWell, I suppose the research you qoute, Tisha-1, is not about the lavender scent you find in deodorants. At least, not the ones available in the Third, er, Tenth World. THAT smell of "lavender" gives you the shivers.

By the way, Karl Marx was a fool, and I have proof of it. He said that "religion was the opium of the people". Poor little guy, he never smelled "Opium" on a woman. I have the feeling, however, that you need no scent at all. With all due respect to your husband.

Anaïs Anaïs is fine. But, kind of plain.

And then, two more cents (six cents now): it seems that some other men like the perfumes that suggest junk food :-). With all due respect to the ladies and their tastes, floral fragrances make me think of disinfectants and detergents. Something like "Oh dear, do you look hot in those rubbers and latex gloves, all sweaty, while you scrub the dishes with Fabulous. Can't wait to see you put Fab on the laundry". Opium and Chanel n° 5, on the other hand... make you feel that the dishes can wait.

Tisha-1 agony auntAnd whoa nelly! the right scents can make you appear up to 12 pounds lighter to the sniffer!!!

Floral and spice being the ones that worked that way in men who found those scents pleasant.

I have to go perfume shopping!

Tisha-1 agony auntIf you want to increase penile blood flow, ahem, it turns out that the combined scents of lavender and pumpkin pie were the most effective in a research study. Who woulda guessed it?

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (5 December 2008):

Tisha-1 agony auntI heard somewhere that the most attractive scent on a woman for a man is vanilla, or at least most men found it alluring. I'll see if I can find the research data.

Ysatis was my choice for years. I've also loved Anais Anais, and used to wear Opium in my younger and wilder days. How many cents are we up to here? Soon you'll have a whole dollar's worth of opinions!

Danielepew agony auntWell, Oldersister, you have a good taste on perfumes.

My additional two cents (that makes it four cents). A floral perfume can be great, and I respect other people's opinions, but that smells too much like "The Little House on the Prairie" to me. The woman smells good, but smells shy, too. Kind of putting perfume on Barbie. If you want to be thought of as a wild panther, use the smell of a black panther. Or a leopard, or a tigeress; you get the picture.

Trent Gear agony auntA subtle floral perfume can't really go wrong. Guys may have a preference for one type or another, but subtle floral is a safe place to start.

A female reader, bubbloo24 Isle of Man +, writes (5 December 2008):

bubbloo24 agony auntWell, my boyfriend loves the perfume I wear called Diesel plus plus. Unfortuantly, the smell wears off quite quickly.

I agree that men seem to like the more floral smelling perfumes.

I really like J - Lo's perfume called Live, Kate Moss' new perfume, So... desirable (Not v. expensive) and Kylie Minogue's Showtime.

I have to say it's the more delicate smelling ones are the ones I prefer, like the other aunts and uncles have said, don't wear anything too heavy. Opium, I agree, is a nice one.

Spray a little in your hair, men seem to love it :P

Take care xx

A reader, anonymous, writes (5 December 2008):

I have found most men like the more floral feminine scents than the really heavy ones such as Poison, Femme etc. It really depends on the memories the man has when he smells a particular scent. I would always wear something you like as that will probably suit your own body smell more than picking something just to please the man,

bittersweetsin agony auntI use a small amount of Vera Wang Princess with a spritz of Victoria Secret Vanilla Lace. I enjoy the soft floral notes while the guys enjoy trying to place the scent, most say it reminds them of hot chocolate, might sound odd but they've all loved it ;)

A reader, anonymous, writes (5 December 2008):

It depends on the guy mostly.

My husband likes me to smell like flowers.

PearBlossom is my favorite.I have bodyspray, perfume and bodycream for PearBlossoms.Ha Ha.

I just checked the brand for you.Its Bath & BodyWorks Luxuries.I think the price is very cheap.

More than brands, look out for the perfume that suits your character. You can carry off a perfume much better that way.

We women naturally emit a kind of smell that will match the taste of some lucky guy.Its called Pheromones.

Its always there even when you don't wear a perfume.Keep yourself clean though. Its not the smell that comes from not taking a bath for a week.
