Question - (11 January 2023) 5 Answers - (Newest, 13 January 2023)
A male United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I joined a dating site to talk to women as I’m single, a girl messaged me who liked my profile, got in touch. we had many things in common and talk every day. since then, I’ve been having doubts, as many people lie on dating sites about their age. she’s sent me a few pictures of herself but I believe she is not eighteen and is in fact maybe fourteen. I’ve told her not to further communicate with me and have cut all ties.

she hasn’t been in contact with me, but what should I do if she replies, should I just ignore it?

hope your able to help.

thanks.

kenny agony auntThis is the thing with online dating, you never really know who you are talking to, online people can be anyone they want to be.

I suggest given her age of 18 i would disregard that chat and maybe set your age ranges to maybe 25-35.

Did she send you any "sexy" pictures (whether clothed or unclothed)? If she did get rid of them immediately. You shouldn't keep them if you suspect her to be under 18.

Sure, do a reverse image search as HoneyPie suggests to see if she pops up on any social media to see if you can confirm her age. But I DON'T think you should make any attempt to contact her mother or anyone else she knows.

I hate to sound very dramatic but if she DOES end up underage and the pictures WERE provocative in any WAY, I think you find yourself in a whole ton of shit if you took that option.

I truly hope the pics were all innocent and/or she turns out to be 18. If not I suggest you check out this child protection website where you can raise concerns about a child or young person's behaviour in complete confidence.

It is clear to me that when a girl says she is 18 and looks for guys of 30 she is a scammer of some sort. No real woman of 18 would want a guy of 30 unless he is famous and rich.

Honeypie agony auntTry a reverse image search.

If it pops up a profile (like Facebook) If she IS 14 - see if her mom is a contact and message her with (preferably) screenshots so she knows what her daughter is up to.

Or contact the dating site and let them know.

Also, what is a guy in his 30's doing chatting up someone who is "supposedly" 18?

Look for someone your own age. Less drama.

Oh! Block her and screenshot that you blocked her. Screenshot all pictures and communication. She may be trying to set you up. It's possible she's 18 and just looks young, but your intuition is trying to tell you something! Next time, date someone closer to your age, not 18!
