Gena Bullock agony auntyou are young...your body is in a hormonal turmoil attempting to 'grow up', so give it time and don't stress yourself about it. IF you aren't active, then it could be that you are too thin? Weight has a lot to do with when and how your periods occur. Don't fret. See a doctor or gynocologist if you are too concerned. Have you talked to your mother about it? Maybe she had on/off periods at your age too. It's something to share with her. If she's not in your life, then talk to a close female adult or nurse at your school. Get professional advice, not from girlfriends your age. Be mature about it. You'll be fine. Best wishes.

A female reader, happytochat Australia +, writes (13 March 2008):

There are many reasons as to why you havent had a period for such a long time.

It could be due to weight. Sometimes if your really skinny or underweight it can cause irregular periods.

It could be related to exercise- if you over exercise it can cause missed periods.

It could be a hormonal imbalance. If this is the case then usualy I think the doctor will put you on some type of pill to bring your hormones into balance.

It could also be that since you are young and have not had your period for long that its irregular. Usualy the first couple of years of your period can be irregular, however, I do think you should seek professional advice. Although many girls do get irregular periods its a good idea to get a check up because it could be serious, but it may not be, you just dont know.

So go to you doctor and tell them whats happeing and they will ask a few questions about your diet, how much you exercise, if you have an excessive hair on your body (suggests you have a hormonal imbalance) and they will probably measure your weight and height etc and maybe do a blood test.

When your young and haven't been getting your period very long it can be pretty irregular. If you feel fine other wise I wouldn't worry. Since you aren't sexually active you have nothing to hide so you should talk to your mom or school nurse just to make sure. Even if you are active its still a good idea to talk to someone.
