Question - (2 October 2013) 2 Answers - (Newest, 3 October 2013)
A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I'm lesbian and there's this lady I'm talking to, nothing serious n we r not dating. It's been a month now. Today she did something really stupid which got me now questioning her intelligence, I always questioned it which is why I wanted to develop just a friendship first so not to rush anything without knowing what I'm getting in to. She's perfectly cool n understands a relationship is not something I'm considering. Thing is, I thought she had more common sense. Today she told me of a email she recently received from an old classmate from grade school. The classmate have since gone back home to her country. Anyways the email asked that since both her parents were murdered and she is now a refugee she needs my lady friend to gain power of attorney over the 5million dollars her late father put into a bank using her information. Also my lady friend has to get this poa from a sengelase lawyer. She has to transfer the funds to her account and give the old classmate the bank info so she can get to the united states via plane and expenses. My lady friend has been going back n forth writing emails buying calling cards, etc. Mind u she doesn't have money for this she actually have court dates due to unpaid tickets. Newayz I told her off the back its a scam. She said u haven't even read the emails yet. I read it for her piece of mind and it only further supported my beliefs that it is a scam. I told her she should talk with an American attorney to determine if its legitimate and what's her rights. She refused to call a free consultation lawyer. I'm so upset that she is so naive. Everyone knows they will still money out your account and or your identity and u gain nothing. She has contacted the sengalese lawyer as the email states. I'm seriously thinking about demoting her as a friend. She said she would take me shopping once she get the money. I'm so angry with her and feel so bad for her. I'm harsh but I'm angry bc I wish I could protect her from this inevitable disaster but she's not hearing me bc she honestly believes this is legitimate and that she can make us both millionaires. I'm flattered but come on. Thoughts

A male reader, CMMP United States +, writes (3 October 2013):

Why don't you show her reliable evidence that this is a very common scam. Show her what to look for and show her that what's happening fits perfectly with that.

Also, don't be too harsh on her. This isn't only about intelligence, this is a well known scam, but some people, somehow, have avoided hearing about it. That just means she hasn't been exposed to this type of thing.

It definitely means she is naive, but so is everyone at some point.

Sageoldguy1465 agony auntSounds as if your friend is taking part in a proverbial "slow train wreck".... and that she is determined to continue in to that wreck, despite the overwhelming evidence - otherwise - that you are trying to get her to see.....

My/our advice? You're going to have to let her live through that wreck... and you can prep yourself for being a good friend (to her) once it's over....

Good luck...
