I'd just like to point out that HPV (human papilloma virus) is NOT the genital version of a cold sore.

Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex virus and the genital version is Herpes Genitalus - both strains can affect lips mouth and genitals. The treatment for both strains are pretty much the same. Treatments for HPV are different to treatments for herpes.

Both viruses are very hard to get rid of and can lie dormant for along time before causing any problems and both can infect a sexual partner whilst the virus is in its dormant phase. They can also reoccur at any time without proper treatment.

Get checked and tested ASAP - both of you

that sucks...they are the vagina version of a cold sore....she could have been a carrier and it just remained dormit until now...she could have gotten them from someone going down on her ages ago who had the beginnings of a cold sore or who also had the strain on his lips or penis and it was dormit when they had sex with her...it pops up when the person is stressed sometimes and othertimes just for the hell of it...I wouldn't assume she cheated but if you have gotten a cold sore since or have an itchy penis with little pimples on it, know that you have it now too and that sex is a nono for a good 10 days until its gone...

First, HPV is a virus and as such is not treatable with antibiotics. Second, unless you were both virgins, there is no way of telling who got them first (it's possible that you gave them to her). Third, they are treatable and a large percentage of adults in the usa have them. Some estimations claim as high as 80% of the population is infected.

She will be treated and you should get tested.

Both LaraC and the anonymous female reader give perfect advice. It's not an indication that your girlfriend has been unfaithful and either one of you could have been initially infected years before without showing symptoms.

You could both be infected now though so get yourself to the doctor for a check-up as Lazyguy suggests. Google for the nearsest GUM clinic is your area. They are free, totally confidential and many offer a drop-in service so you don't have to make an appointment. They also often run evening clinics

No, it doesn't mean that she has cheated on you. I promise :) Genital warts are tricky little buggers she could have had the virus for a long time before meeting you, or you could have given them to her. As she is pregnant this would explain the warts starting to form a group. You don't need to have the warts to have the virus. If you's have had unprotected sex then you have the virus too.. They are easily treated and she will be able to take the anti-biotics once the baby is born. You can go now and have the virus treated and from now on untill she is treated, use a condom. It's nothing to be ashamed of and EVERYONE at some stage of their lives get an STD.

A female reader, LaraC United Kingdom +, writes (24 November 2009):

Hello,

Genital warts is a highly contagious sexually transmitted infection caused by some sub-types of human papillomavirus (HPV). It is spread through direct skin-to-skin contact during oral, genital, or anal sex with an infected partner.

The viral particles are able to penetrate the skin and mucosal surfaces through microscopic abrasions in the genital area, which occur during sexual activity. Once cells are invaded by HPV, a latency (quiet) period of months to years (decades) may occur. HPV can last for several years without a symptom so it's very possible that your girlfriend had the virus even before you two started seeing each other. Having sex with a partner whose HPV infection is latent and demonstrates no outward symptoms still leaves one vulnerable to becoming infected. If an individual has unprotected sex with an infected partner, there is a 70% chance that he or she will also become infected. Since you have obviously had unprotected sex with this girl odds are that you are now infected as well. Even though it may not be visible in your case (may be many years before you'll see the warts) you now have a responsibility to make sure that no one else gets infected.

I would advice you to speak to a doctor immediately, you girlfriend will need treatment to have the warts removed however, she must NOT buy any over the counter self-applied gels! It is very important that she does not try to treat this herself. The gels are quite strong and there is a definite risk of harming the child if she takes them during pregnancy. There are other options to having the warts removed.

There is no cure for HPV , but there are methods to treat visible warts, which could reduce infectivity.

So to conclude:

- No, your girlfriend probably have not cheated on you. The pregnancy most likely triggered the outburst of warts that she had before she met you.

- You should go see a doctor as you most likely have it as well now

- Let the doctor prescribe treatment as self medicating could harm the child

Mrs.McMeow agony auntIf you have them you know you have them. Its caused by HPV where the guy is the carrier. BUT there is a certain strand responsible for genital warts and you should have had them before her if she got them from you.
