A male United Kingdom age 36-40, *immy88 writes:

I'm 20 and my girlfriend has just turned 16, when she was 15 she told me that her parents were strict and wouldn't approve of the relationship, she's now 16 and they found out about us even though we didn't want them to know yet.

They've made her change her phone number and email address although we still talk as much as possible and i have her new details.

The problem is that they have told her that if they find out that I'm still contacting her then they'll call the police on me. I haven't done anything illegal so i don't see what they can do but I'm not sure.

Is there anything the police can do if her parents contact them ?

A male reader, anonymous, writes (29 January 2009):

16 is old enough to have learned if you want to date someone.

It's old enough to move out if you want to and live alone.

Lawfully the parents cannot stop you two talking, dating or even sleeping with each other.

All they can do is stop you from being in or around the house. It's their house after all and they have every right to refuse entry to anyone they wish.

So keep dating. Let them call the cops and let them see that that will do nothing more then drive you away.

Eventually they are gonna have to come to terms with the fact you are not a child anymore and will be doing things they obviously did at least once in their lives.

Eventually they will.

The police cannot do anything unless they suspect that you did anything sexual with her while she was under 16.

However, she is still their daughter and living under their roof. If they do not want you to see her then you can either force her to choose between you and your parents or you can respect them and try to work with them.

I disagree that 16 and 20 is not a big difference. She is a schoolgirl, you are a grown man. It's fairly easy to guess why her parents don't approve.

Just talk to them and show them you are willing to wait for her to grow up.

Good Luck!! xx

LilPixie agony auntwell the legal age over here is 16 so no theres nothing the police can do about the relationship as long as your not hurting anyone.

16 and 20 is not a huge age difference and her parents need to realise that she's old enough to make her own choices, so if she wants to be with you they shouldnt stand in your way.

i think they should at least give you a chance. maybe you can all sit down and talk about it together?

i hope that things go well for you 2 and that her parents except you.. good luck :) xx
