Massively stressed out about taking a test for a new job....help!

So tomorrow I have this huge test: it's an exam in order to get a super awesome job (actually if you pass this test, you get the chance to have an interview for the job).

Loads of people are taking this test and only 35% of them passed it today. As I said, I have mine tomorrow. Problem is: I couldn't take failing. It would hit me hard on my self esteem. I have studied pretty hard, but it's no guarantee for success. So, if I fail, does that men I am stupid? Also: my husband and his family have been very supportive and I'd hate to let them down... I wouldn't even know how to tell them I failed... would they think I am stupid if I failed?

I'm freaking out big time, maybe I'm just very stressed about the whole thing. Ah, well, thank you all in advance and happy holidays everyone!

fishdish agony auntSounds like you'd actually be "normal" for failing the test, unless you think that 65% that didn't make the cut were all stupid, too! Whatever the field, they have rigorous standards, and it's less about intelligence than ability to master the standardized test, which, even if it has to do with math or something study-able, generally has no reflection on one's smarts on the job. It's been a while since high school, but you used to tests all the time growing up-try to treat it the same: you've worked your butt off, now it's just time to do your best to deliver the goods. no one will think worse of you for being ambitious and trying to turn your dreams into reality.

oldbag agony auntHi

In a way the stress is good, it means your serious about the job. If you fail it will bring you down for a while and people will say the usual things to make you feel better, you will get over it and start to look for another job.It doesn't mean your stupid, it would be more foolish not to try at all!

BUT think positive, you have studied for it,why shouldn't you pass?

Get yourself a relaxing night, bath, candles the lot.Have everything ready to wear and all you need to take, tonight. Then tomorrow all you have to think about is the exam.

Good Luck.

Anonymous 123 agony auntFirst things first, stop freaking out because that wont help you in any way. Whatever has to happen, will. All you can do is put in your best effort and leave the rest to fate. And always, hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

The reason I'm telling you this is because like you, I too was on tenterhooks regarding a super important scholarship which I was trying for. I didn't have a plan B, I just assumed that I would get it because not getting it wasn't in my scheme of things. Well, I didn't get it and boy was I shocked! I couldn't believe my eyes when I read the mail telling me that I hadn't got it. I cried the entire day thinking that I was the biggest failure on this planet, I couldn't bear to face anyone assuming that they would all think less of me. But you know what, no one thought any less of me because everyone knows that giving it your best is what matters. Every result in life wont go your way and you have to take the good and the bad in your stride, smile and move on. Your family and friends know you better than anyone else and they will never think that you're stupid. Tell me, if it were the other way around and your husband was taking this exam and if he didnt happen to make it, would you think HE was stupid? Of course not! Right?

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, stressing out wont help in any way because whatever has to happen will happen and you don't have any control over it. All you can do is, be positive, hope that everything works out in your favour and if it doesn't, ah well you've still a winner because you tried! Give yourself a big pat on the back for trying!! I have absolutely no regrets for trying and not being able to make it because I've gained so much from the experience.

In any case, all the very best and give it your best shot :)
