Is this normal with a serious crush?

A female United Kingdom age 26-29, anonymous writes:

I have just met a guy I really like and am starting to date. I have all the symptoms of a serious crush - butterflies, nervous excitement, restless..

However, I've noticed something strange. Over the past few days I haven't eaten nearly as much as I normally do. This isn't because I've been actively trying - I just haven't been interested in food and when I do eat I feel bloated and sick after. As yet I'm not worried, it's only been happening for a few days but it probably shouldn't carry on. Does this happen to anyone else after just meeting someone?

A reader, anonymous, writes (8 July 2011):

You are experiencing the fight or flight effect. You're faced with a terrifying (yet wonderful) situation and your body's response is to think it has just met a tiger! Your body thinks you might be running away or hiding from that tiger for a while so it helpfully shuts down your hunger centre. But, please do try and eat something. This is a good time to eat all of your favourite foods guilt free. You may only manage a few mouthfuls but it is better than nothing.

Also, let me tell you that crushes aren't limited by age. I'm 33 and have a crush at the moment and am experiencing exactly the same symptoms as you...I tremble as well...I'm just hoping he hasn't noticed! :o)

A lot of people say it has to do with anxiety extra but i think it has to do with the fact your falling really hard for him! I fell in love with this guy, i loved everything about him and I could not eat a thing. It was as if food did not matter anymore. I thought I was nervous but I knew it was something more. So i have been in your situation and your so lucky to have that right now. But remember food is important. You just are incredibly happy right now and dont feel the need to eat :)

person12345 agony auntIt can happen when anxiety levels are higher than normal. Try some breathing exercises to calm down (just try google) a little before lunch to see if it helps. Or some people find carrying peppermint or lavender scented things and sniffing them helps. My guess is definitely the anxiety/tension is causing this. Don't worry about it (that will make it worse!). Just try to figure out how to relax around mealtimes.
