A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (16 August 2008):

Tisha-1 agony auntSorry, I just need to correct Jen's numbers, which are inaccurate.

According to the plannedparenthood.org website,

"Birth control pills are very effective. Combination pills work best when taken every day. Progestin-only pills must be taken at the same time every day. That keeps the correct level of hormone in a woman’s body.

"Less than 1 out of 100 women will get pregnant each year if they always take the pill each day as directed.

"About 8 out of 100 women will get pregnant each year if they don’t always take the pill each day as directed."

----

"Like all birth control methods, condoms are more effective when you use them correctly.

"Each year, 2 out of 100 women whose partners use condoms will become pregnant if they always use condoms correctly.

"Each year, 15 out of 100 women whose partners use condoms will become pregnant if they don't always use condoms correctly.

"You can make condoms more effective if you a) use spermicide with them and/or b) pull out before ejaculation.

"The most commonly used spermicide in the U.S. is called nonoxynol-9. Nonoxynol-9 has certain risks. If it is used many times a day, if it is used by people at risk for HIV, or if it is used for anal sex, it may irritate tissue and increase the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections."

Here's an eye-opening chart from webmd.com, which also has some good information on choosing birth control methods.

It would be a very good idea to talk with your doctor about the options for birth control to increase your protection against unplanned pregnancy. You could choose to go on the pill or other hormonal or implant method, and still use condoms to reduce your risk of STDs.

I hope I haven't worried you too much, but you should have all the information you can to make good decisions. My guess is that if you used the condom correctly, you're pretty safe.

Good luck.

A female reader, Lilly Rose United Kingdom +, writes (15 August 2008):

Lilly Rose agony auntI've been with my boyfriend 3 years and that is the only form of protection we have ever used just a condom and only had 2 scares! Aslong as its used properly and for the whole duration of sex then you should be fine. If your that worried get on the pill. But talking from experience using just a condom is fine!
