Maybe those that enjoy this do so because it is not "normal". I have past girlfriends who have been gravely ill because the guy at the time had an anus fetish. I agree that the porn industry is probably responsible for the popularity of anal adventures, much to the pleasure of the drug companies. Many people carry hiv, hepatitis, etc and you are much more likely to catch this from a persons anus. Is it this risk that adds to the fun? or the smell of excrement? Sorry, I am always up for a bit of adventure but I just don't get this.

 I dont think anyone could say whether it's more common because nobody knows everybody and that kind of behaviour is usually kept secret. I agree the porn industry has glorified it and some people have made it the norm.
What concerns me more is the fact that a lot of men feel let down by their partners because they do not want to indulge in the more extreme side of sexual play. It's still rather an unpleasant activity (healthwise)and nobody should feel it is 'normal' and be made to feel inadequate or bad for not wanting to do it.
Personally I find it very creepy but you know humans, they will do just about any kind of weird, vile, obscene, boundary pushing act to get a rush and then use the merest thread of excuse to justify it...but if you enjoy it...well thats your business.

 As Honeypie says it could indeed be a porn inspired fad. It's not unheard of yet not so out there as to be shocking, but then not much shocks me anyway.
It's not my cup of tea and as person1234 points out, it's taboo for a very good reason. There are risks.
A year or so ago I watched an interview of porn stars, those still active, and though they were not condemning the profession or the lifestyle they did list some of occupational hazards such as numerous infections (the kind person1234 refers to).

I find the idea highly erotic, but have only been allowed to do it once. I'd love to have it done to me but have no expectation that I'll ever find someone willing.

I'd say quite a few men are skittish about going down on a woman anywhere near her period, so I think there's probably a lot fewer men who are eager to go to the next hole down. I'd also say how common it is has more to do with women's expectations, rather than how pleasurable it feels.
All that said, I was shocked the first time it happened to me...mostly because I didn't expect it and it was the first time. To be honest, I can't really remember if I liked it or not.
I'm not opposed to anything anal in general, but I would probably worry about my partner catching e. coli rather than relax and enjoy the experience. But if your lady likes it and you acknowledge the risks, I don't see why you should worry.
