My partners before my current boyfriend wanted me to shave (which I've never done, only trimmed) because they said the hair was "distracting". So is red hair a turn on?

It should be a turn-on, being an "exotic" color down there.
But these days trimming is a necessity (where shaving is the most desired treatment). Try to shave in one direction (to prevent ingrown hair), remove all the hair surrounding the outer labia, and leave a trimmed patch above the clit, so there's evidence of redhair. That should do the trick.

For me red hair is a turn on, however I still prefer a woman to be smooth as it makes me giving her oral just a nicer experience for me as well. It is all individual and some guys will like it and other not.

As to whether red hair is a turn on, well, it is for many of us. Maybe because it's rare, but it's attractive all the same.
Pubic hair, whatever its color, can be attractive or not. It depends on the man. Of course you want to be sexually attractive. But, I think that in some aspects you need to stand your ground. If you like your private parts to look in a certain manner, well, it's your body (which is to say, it is your self). And you're a redhead, so your hair is red.
I would you're sex appeal depends on a lot more than just the color of your hair or what your pubic hair looks like.
I don't believe in stereotypes, but I believe in this one. You're great.

This leads to the logical conclusion that if the hair down there is red, the girl is a natural redhead.
As for why redhead itself is a turnon, well the rarity plays a role but also because redheads are supposed to have firey personalities, smart girls who have a bit of fight in them. As opposed to dumb blondes or wimpy brunettes.
Stereo-type perhaps, but redheads are still the stuff of fantasy (literally, fantasy art has lots of redheads as do fantasy movies).
Young guys raised on porn often get obsessed about pubic hair, it is part of fashion after all. See playmates through the years and you see all trend towards increased baldness, although lately some women opt to go "natural" again.
As an older male, I don't like completely bald, just a nice, non-shaven, natural bush. But guys half my age seem to feel different.
Do what pleases yourselve and any man that can't handle it can go screw himself.
