A female United Kingdom age 41-50, anonymous writes:

My boyfriend of over 2 years decided over a month ago out of the blue that he wanted space. I gave that to him. I was devastated so headed back to my home country for a month to recover. During that time he would text and email and call frequently.

I arrived back in the UK last week... he was being aggressive in his text towards me so I ignored him and picked up my stuff from his apartment during the weekend. He said that he wanted to be friends for now and that later on we could be together. He kept insisting on this.

I was hurt and angry but left him alone... since then he's had been contacting me almost every day either texting me, called me (once) and left me an email(once). I haven't bothered to return his calls, texts or emails. He got annoyed that I had been ignoring him.

Then on Sunday night I phoned up my boyfriend and he said that he wanted space from me because he wanted time out to figure out what he wanted in terms of his job and flat and also whether he could see himself marrying me. He said there was an issue that he thought I couldn't take care of myself and relying on him but I said it was not for him to look after me and push me into doing things etc. Then he said he still loves me but not sure as a girlfriend or as a close friend... He keeps insisting we should be friends for now...

So what is up with that? What does that mean? Guys opinions are appreciated.

I don't get how he has dragged it this long..i wish he had been honest and upfront about it.

He got mad at me for spending a whole month away and i said to him I didnt'really have a choice as it was for my sanity. Then he got angry about my job hunting situation! I don't know why he bothers to get angry about any of that when it is his own doing that I had to getaway from it for a month! Then he got annoyed by thefact that I said that I might return to my home country for good if no job turns up for me in the UK saying I gave up too easily. What ever..to be honest I don't really have much holding me back here anymore .

He even accused me of coming up with the suggestion that i wanted to marry him so that i could stay in the country! I was absolutely insulted as I never suggested such a thing to him at all! It hurts that he accuses me of such things! I never once suggested or pushed him into marriage...he is the one that brought this all up in the first place!

It hurts so much!!!

A female reader, anonymous, writes (3 March 2008):

Hi there! Its obvious he doesnt want to be with you, I think he made up his mind, for some reason he just doesnt want to say it just yet. Dont know why he is having doubts, but it doesnt seem that he really loves you. Do yourself a favour - tell him yourself that its over and ignore him for a while, untill u have settled into your single life. He might ask you whether you still want to be sex buddies (might be one of the reasons why he doesnt want to break up with you for good) say no!!!!! Dont get yourself hurt, its not worth it. He seems to be pretty selfish, all the better for you, you can start looking for your real prince.

Laura1318 agony auntA friend is better than an enemy .

If you are friends , there is no obligations and responsibilities. You are a free agent.

As friends , there is an option to later reconnect back as g/f .If you cannot be friends, then there is no more hope.

Wanting to be friends means there is a probability of being back in the old relationship.

Friends with no strings attached.
