I'm taking laxatives every day... Is this a good thing?

Hi all... I am 25ys old. Since I can remember (14-15 yrs old), I never had free bowel movements. I would poo like once every 2-3 days. I figured that it was because of my dieting and irregular eating habits and not drinking enough water. But, now I do everything right. I eat small, frequent meals through out the day, I ensure I am eating the required amout of fibre and other necessary foods... and drink 3 bottles of water everyday. I see that I'm still facing the same problem. I am taking laxatives everyday now for the past 4 months. Is that harmful? Does that have any bad effects on my body or when I want to have babies or just ANY problems? I know one of the problems is getting addicted to it... but, I feel helpless without them. My stomach grows bigger for two days and looks really ugly sticking out of my clothes... I'm using the Lax's to avoid this embarassment. Please, if someone else has the same prob, or any information regarding this, let me know. Really appreciate reading this and PLEASE HELP ME.

May I say, HBF, you're awesome man. "trust me, some are so good I feel like keeping them" hahaha... [thumb up]

BTW, Ms. Anon, if you have Metamucil in the area, try that too. Comes default in orange flavor with others as well.

Wendyg agony auntI think your body may have got used to taking the laxitives. With constant use the bowel will not react as it normally would and will rely on the use of the pills. It will take a while to get back to normal even though you have changed your diet. YOu need to go get checked out to make sure you havent done any lasting damage, and to also check there isnt another problem causing this. Diet does play a big part in our motions behave and we are all different. Try not taking the laxitives for a few days and wheen yourself off, but do go along to the doctor to get proffesional advice.

harshbutfair agony auntHello my constipated angel.

Firstly, see your doctor about stopping the laxatives. Only they can tell you what you've done to your health and how to get off them and normalize your bowels.

Now for my opinion.

You say that you're eating "enough" fibre yet you still aren't regular. As someone who takes great pride and pleasure in their daily poo (trust me, some are so good I feel like keeping them), let me give you some tricks I've learnt along the way.

If you're still not pooing each day, unless you have an underlying medical problem (SEE YOUR DOC!), chances are you AREN'T eating enough fibre. Now here is a secret passed down to me from my gran.

PRUNES

On night one, I want you to eat a prune. Then the next night two prunes, then three, until you find are going to the toilet each day. Trust me, if you do this you will find you get regular.

Also make sure you're eating your 5 portions of whole fruit/veg a day.

Good luck and happy pooping!

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (14 June 2006):

DrPsych agony auntLaxatives are not meant for regular use because they make the bowel dependent on them - that means you will find it difficult to use the toilet without taking them. Diet is part of constipation problems, but there are medical reasons why you may have bowel difficulties and you ought to see a doctor to exclude the possibility of Crohns disease and other intestinal disorders. Laxatives purge the body of vitamins and nutrients, and you tend to lose a lot of water too.

Long term use is also associated with an increased risk of rectal cancer and intestinal diseases.
