I'm pale but my genitals aren't.

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I apologize as this is quite personal.

I am a 21 year old Caucasian female.

My vagina lips are very dark, almost black. My anal area is the same but not as bad. I'm not sure why this is going on or how to lighten the area, it's quite embarrassing.

I shower and clean the area daily. I shave when needed. I am not sexually active or taking any medication. This issue has been going on since puberty. Considering I'm quite pale, the dark areas really stand out and obviously do not match my skin tone.

What should I do?

A female reader, Honeypie United States + , writes (13 November 2015):

Honeypie agony auntYep, pretty normal.

I have read that is more common in people of Hispanic descent, but not uncommon for anyone. It is by far more common in men than women.

Some of your most sensitive skin is in the groin area and wearing synthetic fabrics and tight clothes can discolor the skin. Specially if you sweat a lot to top it off. and again shaving or using hair removal creams can also worsen it.

Don't bleach it. If you have you heart set on wanting the skin to be lightened, use lemon/lime juice. If you use it daily for about a month it CAN help lighten the skin. Some say natural yogurt can do the same "trick". And of course exfoliating the skin (specially if you shave) is smart too as it will remove dead skin and can prevent small infections from the shaving. These infection CAN also darken the skin. But I would be careful with the lemon/lime (specially if you shave) because I can imagine the sting it can cause.

Use cotton underwear. Not synthetic fabrics, LET your skin breathe.

In today's society where everyone have to look the same, I can see how it makes you think it weird or odd... but really how OFTEN do you REALLY look at other women's genitals?

CindyCares agony auntIt is normal. And,if this may cheer you up, it often happens with male genitalia too.Often their penis is quite darker than the skin tone in the rest of their body.

A female reader, So_Very_Confused United States +, writes (13 November 2015):

So_Very_Confused agony auntIt's very very common and it's normal.

It will get worse after pregnancy and childbirth and extend down your inner thighs too. It's actually one way to tell if a woman has had a child or not.

It has to do with blood flow etc. It was never a big deal as women did not shave their pubic region so folks did not notice much. Any person that complains about it is not worth having in your life. Remember that.

Do not bleach it. DO not put makeup on it. DO not apologize for it. IT is who you are and love who you are.

Oh no I am not planning on bleaching the areas, they are just very dark compared to my surrounding skin tone. I'm embarrassed about it. I just don't know what has caused it.

Mina_Bhamji agony auntThat's quite normal. You might have to get a hard scrub and scrub it very effectively, gradually it'll go lighter.

A male reader, Been there Now over it United States +, writes (13 November 2015):

This is not terribly uncommon and I think it is natural, not something that comes from hygiene or health. I once read about someone who underwent genital bleaching...I'm not sure how that was done but I wouldn't try it at home. As for what your lovers might think of this, most probably won't give a darn. I have experienced this personally and wasn't the least bothered by it. But as it really is bothering you, see a dermatologist. Here's a link to one of numerous web sites that discuss this situation....

A male reader, anonymous, writes (12 November 2015):

hmm who are you to say the colours dont match..i'll bet they do!

Tone of skin is something unique to each person and not only do we have tone but we have shades of tone and also toned areas that are shaded.

Further more we have complexion!

I would neversuggest you bleach these delicate areas.

It is soooooo unnecessary.

Moreover bleaching is not cool!

Now be chilled and let those areas be.

Believe me , if any guy thinks your arse and labia are odd then they are odd!

I hope your not planning a career in porn because the guys that watch that are desparate for any action.

They wouldnt mind who would wriggle their hips so long as they could be sure to not get aids or std.

But seriouzly...you are picking holes in yourself and you'll end up like a self esteem sieve if you dont give yourself a break.

When you have sex you do what nature tells you to do, so please let nature be your best designer.

Having said that ,you will probably start a new trend where everyone paints their vaginas some shade of neon.

Who knows maybe you are the future vagina designer!
