A male United Kingdom, anonymous writes:

I started university back in september, I really enjoy the course, I have a good set of friends, I go to the gym, play hockey and football, and people really like, a big change from high school.

Yet I've noticed that I am feeling down every other day, some days I'm up for anything. Other days I just wnat to crawl in a ball and hide in a corner. I know it's because I'm depressed. I felt depressed every now and then last year (as most people do) but I knew I couldn't tell anyone about it as they would get angry. Today on the bus I just broke down in tears because I felt that I don't like myself.

My questions are - Why is this happening to me? Does this make me a weak person? Should I get Help? Moreover, if I want to start a family will my children be infected by his "disease" I carry?

Please talk to a medical professional that you trust. It is fairly common for first year students go through a bout of depression, but depression can be very difficult to fight through alone. Your close friends and family will not be angry at you, so talk to people that you trust to help you get through this. Your university will certainly have a counselling service that you could talk to. Make sure you get some help. Take care!

Blue_Angel0316 agony aunt You appear to be having some form of depression. It could be caused by improper diet, lack of sleep , vitamin defiency, stress or other underlying causes.

If you work or go to school and play with too much zest then suddenly you crash it could be from physical or mental exhaustion. ADHD can cause it too.

Sometimes low blood pressure or diabetese can cause these same symptoms when the blood or the blood sugar becomes unstable.

There are other conditions which could cause this. Being bi-polar can cause you to feel extreme hyper or manic then you will suddenly crash as you hit the depressive phase of the condition.

At any rate you should seek medical advice. Get proper sleep, eat well and try to work on handling the stress levels which can cause the fluctuations of the chemicals in your body and brain.

Somet things can be hereditary but don't be overly concerned at this point because I know from experience that many things can mimic signs and symptoms of several different diseases.

I have what is termed as Affective Disorders due to having a rare form of rare tumorous medullary thyroid cancer. Some of the conditions were caused directly from the cancer itself affecting my immune system. However certain things were noted in the genes of certain family memebers. Again not all of the members of the 7 sibling family were affected by any or all of the conditions.

With moderm medical and physcological evaluations and treatments many conditions are put at bay and sometimes rarely even noted.

God bless you and help to set your mind at ease. Again please seek the advise of a medical professional.

Hi, so you started university just a few months ago. You are going through a big adjustment, you have been under your parents guidance probably your whole life until now, and are you living away from home for the first time?

You know it is very common for first year university students to experience some mild depression, this is a big change for you and a lot of stress studying and making it to your classes on time.....so try to get enough rest, and phone your family and talk to them about how you are feeling, reach out to them, why should they be mad? If you can't talk to your family then, seek out the help of your university counselors, they are there to help you, perhaps you may need to lighten your school load if you find it all too much. Stop worrying about being depressed and passing it on to your children, they would only have about a 2% more liklihood of being vunerable to depression than the general population if you did have it....besides there are a lot more serious hereditary diseases out there than a propensity to depression.

You might also go get a physical to make sure you are healthy and tell your doctor about your moods and anxiety, there are many new medications out there with little side effects that can really help, if that is what you and your doctor decide together is in order....but you need to talk to a doctor first to determine if in fact you are depressed or merely homesick.

Souunds like you have some good things going, so hang in there.

A male reader, tux United States +, writes (26 October 2007):

tux agony auntI wouldn't really call depression a disease. It's just your mind working in overdrive overthinking and overrationalizing the bad part in one's life where everything isn't perfect. It throws out the notion that everything in life isn't perfect. I find it hard to believe that if you told someone you were depressed, that they'll be angry with you. Everyone needs to talk their problems out once in awhile, you need to find someone you could talk to, whether it is a friend, family or therapist. But you just need to remind yourself that it's not the bad at all. It's just a lull in the times of life. No matter what your station in life, it could always be worse. A guy without shoes was very sad until he met a man without feet. A little on the dark side, but I hope you get my point.
